Born July 17, 1943, in Stewartsville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Carl and Della (Miller) Helms. Carl graduated from Norwayne High School in 1961 and then proudly served in the United States Coast Guard as a Petty Officer 3rd Class from 1962 to 1966. He went on to attend Wooster Business College and later earned an associate's degree in transportation from Akron University.
On September 7, 1968, Carl married Nancy Davis of Canton, Ohio, who survives him.
Carl worked as a Logistics Manager for Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) for 28 years, then at LSI Industries in North Canton, Ohio, until retiring in 2014. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, taking great care of his lawn and property, and tinkering with various things. He especially loved sharing stories about his Coast Guard service, reminiscing about childhood in Southeastern Ohio, and playing the drums in his younger years.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Helms; six children, Charlotte Sumney of Wadsworth, Matt Helms of Wilmot, Jennie Roeser of Rittman, Jason (Michelle) Helms of East Canton, Martin (Angela) Helms of Rittman, and Nathaniel (Rashelle) Helms of Doylestown. He was a proud grandfather to thirteen grandchildren: Matthew (Christy) Helms, Brayden Sumney, Cheyenne Helms, Roslyn Sumney, Aubrie Roeser, Alyssa Helms, Mickenzie Helms, Austin Helms, Sarah Helms, Autumn Roeser, Aden Helms, Kamber Helms, and Arizona Helms; and great-grandfather to two, Caroline Helms and Malikai Anderson. Also surviving are his sister, Cleo Kocher of Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his son, "Little Carl" H. Helms Jr., his sister, Carol Sabitino of West Virginia, and son-in-law Harvey "Boomer" Sumney of Wadsworth, Ohio.
A cremation military honors service will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, with the date to be announced.
