SOUTHINGTON – Carl P. Rykoski, age 50 of Plainville, passed away unexpectedly on February 28, 2023, at Bradley Memorial Hospital.
Carl was born in Waterbury, CT on June 30, 1972, the beloved son of Ted Sr. and Nicole (MarcAurele) Rykoski. Carl graduated from Blessed Sacrament Grammar School, Holy Cross High School, and Quinnipiac University. He also attended Temple University as a post-graduate. Carl loved deep sea fishing with his father, brother, and friends. In his younger years, he often got seasick, but that never stopped him from going. He loved all animals and had a special connection with Buddy II. Carl often said that after Buddy died, it was this dog who sent Woody along as his replacement to help heal his broken heart. Carl lived with the pain of being a lifelong Red Sox fan. Above all, Carl was a kind and gentle man who will live on in the memories of all the people he loved and who loved him.
Left to cherish his memory and honor his legacy along with his parents are his brother Ted Jr. & his wife Christa, and their son TJ. He also leaves behind the love of his life and caregiver, Laura Hall. Carl is also survived by his aunts & uncles Diane LeDuc, Doris Schadee, Denise & Danny Raskin, Sharon & Gary Bouffard, Donald & Nancy MarcAurele, Cheryl MarcAurele, Marcia & Tom Blinstrubas, and Katherine & Rick Scranton and many, many cousins.
Family and friends may visit with the Rykoski family on Wednesday March 8, 2023, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St. Waterbury, CT. I just learned of Carl´s passing and have no words that are adequate. I worked with Carl in Residence Life at Quinnipiac 1992-1994. His wit, his caring, his spunk, and his presence were all so special to me and brought so much to our team. I cannot believe that he is gone. May he know peace.

I first met CARL when he and my sister were attending Quinnipiac college back in the 1990s, and I was doing my residency in orthopedic surgery at Yale. CARL and I hit it off and were both enamored with sailing on long island sound. We bought a 22 foot sailboat and started sailing together regularly. CARL became a regular at our house for those happy years, and we took my kids out sailing with "Uncle CARL" around New Haven Harbor, Branford and the Quinnipiac river basin, where we kept our little boat "Carpe Diem" across from our home. I´ll always remember CARL as that giant young man with a ready smile, and a dry wit, who enjoyed getting out on the water and sailing as much as I did. Later, CARL worked in research at Yale and was co-author of a seminal study in hip surgery. He then went into the biomedical industry for several years. I enjoyed hearing about his many adventures overseas and at home during that period of his life. We kept in touch over the last three decades and were finally able to reconnect in-person just a few years ago when we went to one of the New England Spine Study Group meetings in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. By then, CARL had had some of his health problems arise, but he had such an incredibly positive attitude about life in general, and he seemed to "sail" through life´s ups and downs like a skilled sailor should! His wonderful character certainly made my own life´s problems easier to bear. He always had a way of encouraging people to get up again whenever they fell. If we talked on the phone or exchanged emails, I always experienced that warm, happy feeling of gratitude that I knew CARL, like so many of you reading this must also felt. He was "another brother from another mother," as he often quipped about our long-standing friendship. As I look at the big, rising full moon over Fort Polk Louisiana tonight, March 8th, 2023, I think of the many nights long ago when Carl and I sailed out into New Haven harbor at night under that same, familiar moon. It sometimes was with my wife and two older daughters as toddlers, but always along with a few beers for my 6 foot 5 inch tall "little brother" and me. Beer and sailing under a full moon are somewhat simple things that I will always cherish sharing with Carl for my lifetime. God bless everyone of you who Knew Carl; I look forward to sailing with him again on another beautiful moonlit night, on a perfect sea, and with a few beers onboard, just for the two us and our Captain.

When I met Carl at Quinnipiac University. He was the most loving and welcoming person I had met. He had a huge heart, a wonderful sense of humor, and lived his life to the fullest. He was someone who touched the lives of so many, and his kindness and joy will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

We are so grateful to have known Carl. We have fond memories when we lived next door and Carl would always be willing to lend a helping hand in any way. He never failed to make us laugh with his quick wit, and was a very gentle soul. Rest in peace, we will never forget you.
