Today we celebrate the life of Carl Joseph Vicknair, Sr. a husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, dedicated Vietnam War veteran, carpenter, role model and a man of faith. Carl Joseph Vicknair, Sr. passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at the age of 75. He was born in Reserve, LA and a resident of St. Amant, LA. Carl was an avid hunter, fisher, woodworker, gardener and cook.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Merry Gay Michel Vicknair of Garyville. Loving father of Holly Vicknair LeBouef (Stephen) and Carl Joseph Vicknair, Jr. (Allison). Grandfather of Austin LeBouef (Brooke), Haley LeBouef, Blake LeBouef, Max Vicknair, and Maggie Vicknair. Great grandfather of Lawson LeBouef and Luke LeBouef. Son of the late Justine Brady Vicknair and Joseph D. Vicknair. Brother of James C. Vicknair (Gerda), Anita Abreo (Johnny), Susan Kinney (Jon), Nancy Duhe (Chester) and the late Joseph Denis Vicknair (the late Zelma), Norman Vicknair, Joseph Melvin Vicknair (the late Nancy), Peggy Teen (the late Micky), Kitty Ducote (the late Ray), Love Joy Catoir (the late Gerald) and John Drew Vicknair (Brenda). Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The youngest of 12 children, Carl was born to Joseph and Justine Vicknair in Reserve, LA on January 5, 1949. He grew up in Reserve, LA and was a graduate of Leon Godchaux High School, class of 1968. Carl was then drafted in 1969 into the United States Army 5th Infantry Division where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, receiving a Bronze Star thereafter. As a proud veteran, Carl was a member of the Gonzales Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Upon his return from Vietnam, Carl married Merry Gay Michel of Garyville, LA. Their love gave them two children Holly and Carl Jr., five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Carl enjoyed traveling around the country, being outdoors, and attending his children and grandchildren's extracurricular activities. More than anything, Carl was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. There was nothing Carl loved more than to spend time with his family. Whether it was attending the University of Louisiana Lafayette sporting events or crabbing in Grand Isle, Carl loved every minute he spent with his family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation and Funeral Mass at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1550 Hwy 44, Reserve on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Truly sorry to hear of Carl's passing. Prayers go out to the family. I worked with Carl from 1982 to 2008. He was a good friend and one of the kindest people I met and worked with. We went hunting and fishing and I greatly enjoyed the times I spent with him. I have thought about our too few times together often with fond memories.

My heart was saddened to hear of Carl's passing. We lived next door to each other for several years before we both went in the Army. And although we served in Vietnam at the same time, we didn't see each other again for many years after. I am grateful that we were able to reconnect on social media, and in person several times over the last few years. May Merry Gay, Holly, Carl Jr., and the rest of his family find peace and comfort in the wonderful memories they made together with Carl.
