Carroll Eugene Cathey was born May 2, 1940 to John Prince Cathey and Margaret Ruth (Winscott) Cathey, and transitioned to his heavenly reward on November 15, 2025. He married Pat Jorgensen and together they enjoyed traveling, live theatre and spending time with family. Carroll had the good fortune to visit over 60 countries and five continents.
Carroll was born in Columbia, Missouri, moving to Kansas City, Missouri, as a child. He attended school in Kansas City, Kansas, graduating from Rosedale High School in 1958. During high school he served as class officer for multiple years and vice president of his senior class. He was a four-year letterman athlete in basketball and football. He played on the state championship basketball team as a sophomore, which allowed the school to move up in class for his junior year. His junior year, they were 2nd in state, in a much larger class of schools. One of his favorite high school memories included a basketball tournament trip where he first experienced eating Rice Krispies cereal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top – which became one of his favorite treats!
Carroll attended the University of Central Missouri. Carroll was a lifelong worker, initially selling eggs and berries door-to-door with his siblings, then securing his first paid employment at the young age of 13 by offering to help cover a shift for his brother, John. He did such good work that the owner of Josh & Jacks in Mission, Kansas, gave him a job of his own. He often walked 3 miles to work to honor his commitment to this position. As an older teen, he worked at a flower shop, driving a VW bus to make deliveries and got to help make floral arrangements. Carroll was gifted in sales, first working for Fuller Brush, later at M&G Motors, with the bulk of his career as the owner of Car City Motor Company, from which he retired in 2018. He was known for operating an honest and caring dealership, maintaining a dedicated following of customers. He served as an ordained minister in the Community of Christ Church, helped launch Camp Courage Missouri serving adults with special needs, he served on the board for Progressive Community Services for over 15 years, dedicated time to local charities and invested in cultural art in the local community.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, John and Robert, and beloved fur-babies, Harry and Willie.
He will be missed by his family, including his wife, Pat; fur-baby, Oliver; brothers, Richard (Alice) and Raymond; his sister, Diana; son, Matthew (Cheryl); daughter, Janet (Steve); exchange student daughter, Mervi; son-in-law, Chris; daughter, Julie (Stephen); grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of extended family and friends.
Unfortunately, Carroll was unable to donate his organs but he is donating his pacemaker to prolong the life of a canine through the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
In lieu of flowers, Carroll requested donations to the St. Joseph Animal Shelter or the Performing Arts Association, both of
St. Joseph, Missouri.
