Catherine “Ruth” Johnston

Catherine "Ruth" Johnston, age 92, passed away on February 5, 2026, at her home in Slidell, Louisiana, surrounded by her family. She was born in Laurel, Mississippi, and was the cherished daughter of the late Nolan and Myrtle Blackledge. Ruth is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 71 years, James I. Johnston Jr., her three children, Julie Johnston, Jim Johnston, and Janie Darby (Sid), along with four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ruth earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business from the University of Southern Mississippi where she served as President of her sorority and excelled as a straight-A student. She was a teacher and substitute teacher for many years before joining her husband in building a successful material brokerage company. Ruth loved doing accounting work and following the stock market. She carried her sharp mind and love of learning throughout her life.

The Beau Rivage was her home away from home. Ruth made the best homemade fudge and could pan-fry anything to perfection. She loved people and never met a stranger.
