Charles "Marty" Amsler II, 81, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital. He was born October 26, 1942 in Evansville, Indiana to the late Charles Martin and Helena (Prior) Amsler.
Marty graduated from Bosse High School in 1960 where he played football and was named to the All-Conference team of the Indiana Collegiate Conference for his position at defensive end. He later played for the University of Evansville and was the first graduate from the university to play for the NFL. In 1979 and 2001, he was inducted into the University of Evansville Hall of Fame and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. Marty played football in the Continental Football League and was then drafted into the NFL in 1965 by the Dallas Cowboys. He later signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears in 1967 where he played for three seasons and then went on to play for the Bengals, Packers and Broncos. He was a member of the NFL Players Association and former Players Board of Directors.
Marty formerly served on the Evansville board of public works and zoning appeals. He was a member of Bethel UCC, formerly sang in the church choir, and was on the board of directors. He was also a member of the Downtown Quarterback Club, Masonic Lodge, and announced Friday night high school football.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Jean (Richardson) Amsler; son, Charles Martin Amsler III of Milwaukee, WI; daughters, Michelle Hamric of Clarksville, TN, Kristine (Jonathan) Stinson of Terre Haute, IN, and Noelle (Jason) Lee of New York, NY; grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Amsler, John Jay, Lauren and Allison Hamric, Hadley (Alex) Eickhoff and Hudson Lee; great-grandchildren, Rae Elise and Crew Eickhoff.
In addition to his parents, Marty was preceded in death by his sister, Lori Ockert.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2024 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. A Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 13 at the funeral home with Reverend Tim Garrett officiating.
Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Donation Processing Center, P.O. Box 42040, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
