Charlie Lombard Cobb, 77, of Port Orange, FL passed away on August 8, 2023. He was
born on September 12, 1945, in Augusta, Georgia, to parents Dr. Ty Cobb, Jr. and Mary
Dunn Cobb, and was named for his paternal grandmother, Charlie Lombard Cobb,
whom Charlie dearly loved. He spent his early years in Dublin, Georgia, but when his
father passed away when Charlie was 7, his mother and the three children moved to
Daytona Beach, Florida, to be close to her family.
Charlie attended North Ridgewood, Lenox, Ortona, and Seabreeze High schools. In
high school, he excelled in 3 sports and was offered a college scholarship to play
basketball at Florida State University and accepted a scholarship to play football at
Georgia Tech. Soon after graduating from GT, he joined the US Army and served from
1969 - 1971, serving one year in Vietnam. His duty in Vietnam took him into the jungle
at times, implanting sensor devices to be monitored for moving metal or ground
vibrations. His exposure to Agent Orange on these missions is the presumed cause of
the multiple myeloma cancer which led to his death. During his service, he earned a
Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for achievement. After his military discharge, he
began his work in mortgage banking, and then was hired by State Farm Insurance
Company to become an agent in Edgewater, FL. He operated his agency for 27 years
before retiring in December, 2008. Retirement plans were short lived, because his
cancer was diagnosed in early 2010, and most of his time was spent getting treatment
at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. While in business, he was very active in civic groups,
community organization's boards, volunteer work, and church leadership. A famous
American, Will Rogers, once made the statement, "I never met a man I didn't like".
Everyone who knew Charlie would say, "There was not a person Charlie Cobb met who
didn't like him". He had an engaging smile and made everyone who met him feel they
had been friends for years. He was thoughtful, caring, generous, and a true Southern
gentleman. He will be greatly missed! He was predeceased by both parents and his
older brother Ty, and is survived by his wife, Peggy, his sister Peggy Cobb Schug
(John), son David Cobb, daughter Laura Cobb, his stepson Kent Wetherell (Edie), and
seven grandchildren (Emily and Ty Wetherell; Cadence, Sydney and Kelsey Cobb; and
Andrew and Ashlyn Triolo).
A Memorial Gathering is being held Friday, September 8, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:30 pm at
the Lakeside Community Center in the Port Orange City Center, 1999 City Center Circle, Port Orange, Fl 32129

Charlie was a great friend. He always pushed me around playing basketball at the Daytona Y (and Ty would do the same at racquetball). He and my Dad would talk about everything sports... he was a great insurance agent and our family always felt ultimately secure with him. Charlie was a loyal friend and always had your back! We moved to California for 20 years but whenever we ventured back to Fla he´d meet me and we´d have lunch. I remember one time he was standing outside waiting with a book under his arm for me. So thoughtful and respectful.....they don´t make em like that anymore. Charlie and his genuine kindness will be forever missed and daily remembered.

I agree with everything that Pastor Austin Brinkerhoff said about Charlie in his post above. I have known Charlie for about the same length of time. I don´t ever remember seeing him without his big loving and caring smile. I guess, one could say, that his smile was his "Signature". He was a wonderful Christian man who married Peggy, another wonderful Christian. Together they helped lead the path of success for a small Christ-loving/seeking congregation. They are deeply loved. -in-Christ, Lennette Sue Vaught

I met Charlie just once, a few years back when he traveled to Detroit to visit the city where his grandfather, Ty, became one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Charlie was a supporter of "The Greatest Save", which is an organization that helps produce PSA's to help teenagers deal with difficulties they will face in middle school and high school. I met him during a tour of Comerica Park, and later was able to sit with him for a few innings of the game. He was genuine, genteel, and interested in what you had to say. He was, truly, a wonderful human being.

I had the honor and privilege of being Charlie´s pastor for the past 12 years at Christ United Fellowship in DeLand. He was a charter member, served on the Board of Ministers, and was the President of the Corporation. From day one of CUF´s founding, Charlie was the church´s backbone. He was wise, always optimistic, never judgmental, and without a doubt, the kindest, most generous man I've ever met in my life. He went out of his way to make everyone in his presence feel important. Everybody was a somebody with Charlie. He loved the Lord with a passion and expressed that love through how he treated others and gave to those in need. I miss him terribly and always will. Charlie Cobb was a true hero to me.
