Charles Edward Derrick passed away on September 16, 2024 in Kennesaw, GA after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 83. Charles was born September 2, 1941 in Fyffe, AL to his parents John Benton (JB) Derrick and Ivelene (Tody) Westbrook Derrick.
Charles is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vicki, his son, Kevin, his 2 brothers Harvey and David, his 2 grandchildren Landon and Ashlyn and 4 great grandchildren Roman, Esmae, Travis and Estele.
Charles graduated from Fyffe High School and received his associates degree from Jacksonville State University. Charles began working as an apprentice at RF Knox sheet metal company in 1962. He was drafted into the Army in 1965 where he flew helicopters as a Warrant Officer. Charles served with distinction and was decorated with a bronze star, multiple distinguished flying crosses and medals for valor.
Upon his return from Vietnam in 1970, Charles began work as a Test and Balance technician for TAB Services, Atlanta GA. Charles worked with TAB until 1980. He then moved his family back to his home in Fyffe, AL where they enjoyed farm life, but he returned to TAB in 1985 where he served as production manager. In 1988, Charles began a partnership with his longtime friend, Randolph Shannon, at Research Air Flo, Inc. This partnership proved to be the most rewarding endeavor of his life as the company grew and prospered throughout the 20 years of partnership prior to his retirement in 2012.
Charles loved the Lord and served as a deacon at Clarkdale Church of Christ, Clarkdale, GA, in the 1970s, an elder at Central Church of Christ, Rainsville, AL, in the 1980s and at Macland Road Church of Christ, Marietta, GA, in the 1990/2000s.
Charles spent a lifetime of service training others in both a specific skillset as well as a mindset. His gentle and calm demeanor was attractive to anyone that he encountered, and everyone responded to him and wanted to do well for him. Without exception, people will say that it was a pleasure to work with Charles. Charles was a true leader.
Funeral service will 2 PM Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta. Burial will follow at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 from 6 to 8 PM.
