Charles Herbert Figgs, 90, received his heavenly wings on February 18, 2025, in Lexington. He was the youngest of 7, born to the late Mattie Mae Winchester and Luther White Figgs on July 19, 1934. He accepted Christ at an early age at New Zion Methodist Church, where he remained active in choir, men's group, and several other committees as long as his health permitted. Charles dedicated his life to education, family and community service, leaving a profound impact on many.
Charles graduated from Ed Davis High School (Go Mud Turtles!) where his passion for sports truly began. He went on to pursue higher education at Jackson State University where he majored in Physical Education. His passion for sports was evident as he excelled in football and pledged to become a distinguished member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 1954. After returning home from college, Charles married his high school sweetheart Martha Ann (Gilkey) Figgs on October 25, 1957. Shortly after, Charles was drafted and honorably served in the Army for two years, furthering his discipline and dedication.
Returning to his roots in Fayette County, Charles embarked on a notable career in education. He began as a physical education teacher and coach at Dunbar High School and Bryan Station Middle School, High School, among several others elementary schools (Breckinridge, Yates, Russell, Ashland, & Johnson to name a few). His coaching career flourished as he moved on to coach football at Kentucky State University and later earned is MA in Physical Education from Eastern Kentucky University,
Charles was a pillar in his community, actively involved in New Zion Methodist Church. His personal life was enriched by his hobbies which include fishing, cooking, and travelling. He cherished every moment spent with his family.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Martha Ann Figgs, daughters Mabel LaShelle (Figgs) Moss and Kimberly Ann Figgs, his only grandson Charleston Jerelle Moss (granddaughter-in-love Amra Sabic, and four amazing great-grandchildren NaZiyah Lanae MoSs, Denis Jordan Sabic, Mila Jade Moss, and Sage Zahir Moss, a host of nieces and nephews, and several "greats," special family friends Frankie Taylor, Alex Ford, Ronnie Moore, Catherine Terell, Charles Holmes, Ray Relford and Rodney Talbert, his sister-in-law Marcie Beaty,, Julia M Charles Holmes, Ray Relford, and Rodney Talbert, his sister-in-law Marcie Beatty, special nieces Kivvi, Ukari, Julia Mae and Melanie Harris, special nephews, Greg and uncle granddaddy's crew Taylor and Tyler Morton, Nycoe Adams, and Tukea Talbert. Charles was pr4cede in death by his parents Mattie Mae and Luther White Figgs, his brothers Luther, Robert, Jonathan, Lawrence Elmore, Donald B. and Winston Lee, and his like sister Anna Stout.
Charles was a devoted husband, father granddaddy, Christian, and outstanding model to many! His legacy will continue to inspire, and his life will be remembered as truly unforgettable.
