Charles "Charlie" Cameron Hargrove, aged 75, passed away on July 31, 2024, in Leesburg, VA after a 14-year long battle with Alzheimer's.
Charlie was born on December 8, 1948, to the late George Sr. and Ruby Hargrove in Raleigh, NC. He moved to Arlington, VA in 1962, where he attended Washington-Lee High School. Charlie was an avid runner and a proud member of the Washington-Lee Track and Cross-Country teams. As co-captain, he helped lead his cross-country team to the state championship during his senior year. After graduating in 1966, Charlie attended William and Mary on a track scholarship. He ultimately went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Psychology from George Washington University and his master's degree in Industrial Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Charlie proudly served in the United States Army Reserves from 1971-1976.
Charlie had a long career with Fairfax County Government in the Human Resources department. He retired after 31 years of service as the Assistant Personnel Director. Immediately following his retirement from Fairfax County Government, Charlie began a second career with Fairfax County Public Schools as a Compensation Specialist. He remained there for 8 years until he chose to retire due to his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
Charlie married the love of his life, Virginia "Ginny" Hargrove, née Nida, on November 22, 1980, in Leesburg, VA. They settled in Herndon, VA, where they raised their four children. Ginny and Charlie were happily married for 44 years. They enjoyed visiting local wineries, taking beach vacations with their family, and watching classic movies together.
Charlie had a passion for gardening and was known among his family, friends, and neighbors for his green thumb. He also loved to cook, having enjoyed taking French and Japanese cooking classes. He especially loved making his dad's ham soup recipe, anything he could make in his wok, and experimenting with different recipes for his family to enjoy during the holidays.
Charlie was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Ginny; his children Chris (Jen) Hargrove, Paul Hargrove, Lisa Hargrove Turpin, and Michelle (Brian) Simms; his grandchildren Callie Hargrove, Elliott Turpin, Selah Turpin, Logan Simms, Nora Simms, and Ethan Simms; his siblings George Jr. (Georgeanna) Hargrove, Eva (Bernie) Brown, Matthew Hargrove, and Betsy (Hubie) Black; and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his sister Marian Baker, and his brother Patrick Hargrove.
Charlie's family would like to thank the staff of Lansdowne Heights Memory Care in Leesburg, VA. The compassion and dedication of every staff member was evident in the wonderful care they provided for Charlie during the last year and a half of his life.
A private service will be held for Charlie at the EcoEternity Forest in Middleburg, VA in August.
