Charles Joy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, LLP - West 38th St. on Oct. 18, 2022.
Charles Alexander Joy, M.D., 98, a longtime Erie area resident, passed away at UPMC Hamot on Sunday, October 16, 2022. Born in Fredonia, N.Y. on January 13, 1924, he was the son of the late Frank and Carrie (Barone) Joy.
In his youth, Dr. Joy worked hard on his studies and the family farm. He attended premedical school at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. and obtained his medical degree at the University of Buffalo in 1946. He completed his internship at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo and in 1947 married the love of his life, registered nurse Esther Mary Fischle of Buffalo.
Dr. Joy served in the U.S. Army as a medical officer from 1947 to 1949 at the 10th General Hospital in Manila, the Philippines. He began his internal medicine residency at Dearborn (Mi.) Veterans Hospital in 1949 and completed his training at Crile Veterans Hospital in Cleveland in 1952.
Dr. Joy had a solo private practice specializing in diagnostic and internal medicine for 40 years. In addition, he assisted Russell Anderson, M.D., at Erie Tuberculosis Hospital from 1955 until it closed in 1965. During his career, he was a member of the medical staffs at Hamot and Saint Vincent Hospital. He was also a faculty advisor for the Gannon University Physician Assistant Program.
Dr. Joy was a founding member of the Erie Sertoma volunteer service club and was former president of the YMCA Men's Club, which hosted monthly luncheons featuring interesting speakers. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
His many interests included gardening, entertaining friends and relatives at his Fairview home, travel, reading, and listening to jazz music, especially the Count Basie Orchestra.
After the death of his beloved Esther in 2013, Charles resided at Asbury Springhill Senior Living in Erie where he served on the Resident Board and enjoyed the community's many activities as well as visits from loved ones.
Dr. Joy was preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include two children: Charles R. Joy, M.D. (Dawn) of Erie and Jenifer Joy Madden (Mark) of Vienna, Va.; six grandchildren: Nicole Hales (Jeremy) of Plymouth, Ma., Veronica Will (Jim) of Erie, Gregory Joy (Angela) of Erie, Shannon Joy Lyden (Matt) of Brambleton, Va., Brian Madden (Jennifer McPhillips) of San Francisco, Ca., and Reilly Madden (fiancée Sara Moore) of Atlanta, Ga.; six great grandchildren: Caitlin, Sean, Quinn, Charlotte, John, and Cooper; and many nieces and nephews.
