Charles "Chuck" August Sambs passed away on January 19, 2024, at home, surrounded by family. He was 82 years old and under hospice care. Chuck was born on March 24, 1941 in Tigerton to the late Frank and Lena (Westphal) Sambs. On September 29, 1962, he was united in marriage to Annette Neubauer, who survives.
Chuck began working with his father, Frank Sambs in the farming implement business and then went into the logging industry, starting Sambs Forest Products in 1957. Chuck began his firefighting career in 1966. He served as the Tigerton Volunteer Fire Department chief from 1982-1988 and 1993-1999. He served as assistant chief from 1989-1992, and lieutenant from 2010-1014. He also worked for the Tigerton ambulance and rescue in the 2000's. Chuck had a great passion for firefighting and was always looking for ways to improve his firefighting knowledge and skills. In 2016, he made the difficult decision to hang up his axe and retire as a firefighter for 50 + years with the Tigerton Volunteer Fire Department. He will be remembered as someone who gave his all to the TFD. Chuck was known as a hardworking man who loved to be in the shop. Even in retirement, he would visit his son's work almost daily.
In addition to his wife, Chuck is survived by daughter Denise Dundas (Pete Reitan) of Summerville, SC, son Mark (Shelly) Sambs of Antigo, grandchildren Andrew Dundas, Treyton, Sienna, and Keiden Sambs.
In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by siblings Mike "Bud" Sambs, Jean Sambs, and Ken Sambs.
Words from a friend, "Chuck was a genuine man, polite and kind. He was dedicated to many things, putting others first and true to the bone. Chuck was a man who did not command respect, he openly earned it by his actions and how he treated others, such a great man. It's hard to imagine never having him stroll through the door again, but we know he's in a better place." Sen
In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held
