Eugene Barta Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bradley Funeral Home & Crematory - Antigo on Aug. 24, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Eugene Charles Barta, 94, of Antigo, born May 5, 1933, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Eugene dedicated many years of his career to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, where he served as a driver's license examiner. He was respected for his fairness, patience, and professionalism. He retired from the DOT after a long and faithful career of public service.

Alongside his civilian work, Eugene's proudest service was to his country. He graduated at the top of his class in Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army Reserve. Rising to the rank of captain, he served as company commander of the 632nd Armored Division, Company B, Wisconsin National Guard. His leadership, discipline, and devotion to his fellow soldiers were a lifelong source of pride and honor.

Eugene also served his community in other ways, including as chairman of the Antigo Police and Fire Commission.

Faith was the cornerstone of Eugene's life. A Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, he was deeply committed to St. Mary Catholic Church, where he served as a lector and extraordinary minister of the Eucharist.

Family was Eugene's greatest joy. He was the proud father of Kathy (Michael) Orlet, Cheryl Keen, and William (Jamie Kuri) Barta and step-daughter Kathy (James)Arden. He treasured time with his grandchildren Nanette (Daniel) Griese, Robert Orlet (Ivy), Matthew Kuri, Robert Kuri, Chloe Barta, and Jack Barta. He was also blessed with many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Eugene led his family by example: teaching them how to hunt, fish, camp, ride snowmobiles and motorcycles, and tackle do-it-yourself projects. Most of all, he taught them by living with faith, loyalty, and love.

Eugene remained fully aware, sharp, and strong in spirit until his last breath. He knew his time was near, faced it with peace, and reminded his family of his love for them.

He will be remembered as a soldier, leader, teacher, and man of God-but most of all, as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

A memorial service also celebrating the life of his daughter Kathryn will be held Friday, September 5, at 7 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 5, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Queen of Peace Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials donations may be directed to Antigo Police Department K-9 unit, 840 Clermont Street Antigo, WI 54409
