Charles Fredrick Simpson

Charles Fredrick Simpson, 90, of Lexington, Kentucky passed away peacefully at his home Sunday on November 9, 2025, with loving family surrounding him.
Charles was born on February 3, 1935, in Flatwoods, Kentucky. He met his wife, Loretta, in Salina, Kansas where he was stationed while serving on active duty in the Air Force and they were married the day after Christmas of 1957.
Charles earned a degree in Art from Berea College. He used his talents in art and especially woodworking to create many items throughout his life. Early in his career he joined the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) as manager of the woodworking shop, bringing jobs to the area (an impoverished Appalachian region near McKee, Kentucky). He moved his family to Lexington, Kentucky, in 1969 and he continued his woodworking hobby while working full-time to support his family. He made beautiful dulcimers, carvings, specialized cabinets, and even special requests from neighbors. He retired from the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government in February 1997, working in the engineering department. His aptitude for engineering was passed on to his sons: Brian (Mechanical Engineer), James (Civil Engineer) and David (Electrical Engineer).
Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa; and is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; his sons: Brian (Marie), James (Bettye), and David (Marjorie); his grandsons: Christopher Simpson (Vanessa), Michael Simpson, Travis Simpson (Chelsea), Hunter Simpson, and Zachary Simpson; his granddaughters: Sarah Budlove (Daniel), Kate Simpson, Jia Stoll (Nic), and Grace Simpson; and his great-granddaughter Allison Simpson-Pyles.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Pax Christi Catholic Church, 4001 Victoria Way, Lexington, Kentucky. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM until the hour of service. The service will be "live stream" for anyone who can't attend. Military honors will be rendered in honor of Charles' service in the Air Force.
