Charlie LoBello, beloved father, passed away peacefully on April 26, surrounded by his loved ones after a brief illness. Born on December 13, 1930, in Jersey City, Charlie was one of 13 siblings, the son of Joseph LoBello and Clara Butera LoBello.
As a young boy, Charlie had cherished memories of living on a farm in Walpack, New Jersey. He often reminisced about those years, filled with adventures in nature, hunting, fishing, and hard work. From playing near Buttermilk Falls to sledding through the fields in winter, those days shaped his love for the outdoors. Even after the family lost the farm and returned to Jersey City, Walpack remained a special place where Charlie and his sons, along with many of his brothers and nephews, continued to hunt.
After settling on Railroad Avenue in Jersey City, the LoBello family opened a small produce store. Charlie went to Ferris High School and in 1952 was drafted and served in the medical company of the 38th Infantry Regiment in Korea. His company saw significant action, and Charlie received the Korean Service Star Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and other commendations for his service. Upon returning from Korea, he joined his father in operating the family produce store for many years.
In 1957, Charlie married the love of his life, Joan Noonan from Hoboken. The couple moved to Rutherford, where they raised their growing family. Charlie's entrepreneurial spirit led him to open Charlie's Nursery on River Road in North Arlington, a well-known local produce and nursery establishment that he successfully ran for nearly five decades alongside his sons. In 2005, as retirement approached, Charlie and Joan relocated to North Arlington.
Throughout his life, Charlie was an active member of the Columbus Club in Jersey City and enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City with his close friends. He was a loving and proud father to his children: John (deceased, 2017) and his wife Karen LoBello of Delray Beach, Florida; MaryJo and Ralph Jerome of New Hope, PA; Charles and Millie LoBello of Rutherford, NJ; JoAnne and Andrew Lemaire of Shohola, PA; Vincent and Majella LoBello of Cedar Knolls, NJ; David and Virginia LoBello of Hillsdale, NJ; and Rose LoBello of Blairstown, NJ.
Pop-Pop or Grandpa was deeply loved by his 16 grandchildren and their partners: Amanda, Kimberly, Jenna, and John; Ariele and Sara Jerome; Aniella and Francis; LeeAnne, AJ and Charlie Joe Lemaire; Vincent, Daniel, and Rebecca; and Aurora and Gianna. He was a proud great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren. Charlie will also be lovingly remembered by his special nieces and nephews, particularly the Gastelu clan.
Charlie LoBello's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and remembered as a fun loving and devoted father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle and friend.
Visitation will be held at the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home in Rutherford on May 3, from 4 to 8 PM. A funeral mass will take place at the Church of St. Mary in Rutherford on Saturday, May 4 at 10:30 AM.

My condolence to you and your family. He had brought so much joy and happiness to so many, from his Garden center and from his smile you´ll be very missed.

Uncle Charlie, you've impacted my life in so many wonderful ways. I still use the card tricks you taught me and I show my little cousins how to jump for money tied to balloons. And even though Mackenzie is 16, I still hide Easter eggs for her. Don't worry, I make sure there's always a special one to find.

I'm grateful for all the dances, laughs and memories we've shared. Rest in Peace Uncle Charlie.

Until we meet again. I'm sure with you in Heaven, there will be a line around the corner to get in.

Love,
Krista Gastelu Vellis
