Clyde “Chess” Lamb, Jr., age 75, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

Chess was born on February 26, 1949, in Dover, Ohio. He was a son of the late Clyde and Norma Jean (Thomas) Lamb.

Chess was a 1967 graduate of New Philadelphia High School.  After high school, he began a 43-year career as a union pipe fitter for Local 495.  In his free time, he loved to cheer on the New Philadelphia Quakers and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

He was always willing to coach his kids in their various sporting events.  Although he never agreed with an official who made a call against the Quakers or Buckeyes, he was one to teach his family to treat everyone with respect.  He loved to spend time on his boat at Atwood, playing a game of yass, or dancing the jitterbug.  He was a member of the Elks Club 510 and Carl C. Stoller VFW 1445.

On June 9, 1973, Chess married Karen Barr and together the couple have spent the last 50 years building a family that includes their children, Brande (Brandi Mackenzie) Lamb of Asheville, NC, Burton “BJ” Lamb of New Philadelphia, and Brooke (Kyle) Sundheimer of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Abbie and Emma Sundheimer, and Dylan Mackenzie; and many lifelong friends.

In addition to his parents, Chess was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Bob Lamb.

The family will greet guests on Monday, May 20, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory at New Philadelphia.  A graveside service will be held for family and close friends on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 10:00 AM in Evergreen Cemetery at New Philadelphia.  A Celebration of Chess’s life will also be held on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Magoo’s from 4-8 PM.

Memorial contributions in Chess’s name may be directed to the Quaker Club, PO Box 202, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
