Durham - Dr. Christopher John Auty, of Durham, New Hampshire, was born July 27, 1954, in Queens, New York to parents John J. Auty and Marie P. McWilliams. He died on Thursday, December 30, 2021, after a courageous battle with gastric cancer. He passed away peacefully at Wentworth Douglas Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Chris grew up in South Hadley and Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He was an outstanding student and athlete. An all-star full back, member of the track team and co-captain of the ski team, he graduated from South Hadley High School with high honors. He attended St. Lawrence University and was awarded the George F. Baker four-year scholarship. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He was accepted to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and graduated in 1981 with a Doctorate Degree in Dental Surgery. He attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program at the University of Connecticut and completed his surgical residency at Hartford Hospital.

He entered practice in New Hampshire in 1985. An innovative surgeon, he developed the "punch" method for dental implant placement and the "flap" stitch-free method for tooth extraction. Generous with his time and talent, Chris supported the work of Families First, mentored many young dentists and was always there to help patients in need. Chris treated patients like his own family, and our house was always full of thank you artwork, notes, and cookies from appreciative patients. He retired from his practice, Great Bay Oral Surgery Associates, with offices in Somersworth and Portsmouth, in 2019.

Friends and family remember his boundless energy and optimism. He was an avid skier, ski coach, cyclist, surfer, boater, golfer and classic car enthusiast. His zest for life was contagious. Whether on his bike, board or skis, he made new friends with every adventure. Wintertime took him to western Maine, where he would declare nearly every day "to be the best day in the history" of his beloved Sunday River. He regularly pronounced at pancake breakfasts that there was "no such thing as too much maple syrup," while pouring an enormous serving over someone's plate. His house there, known fondly as the "Auty Motel," was always packed with family and friends, especially those from across the New England ski racing community. He hosted athletes and coaches even after his own children moved on from racing.

In recent years, Chris became a devoted classic car collector. He developed an expertise in Glas GTs with a knack for tracking down barn finds and rare parts. He relished the drives, rallies and shows, all the while making a host of new friends.

Chris often declared that he was the "luckiest man in the galaxy," because of his strong network of loving family and friends. A devoted husband of 31 years and loving father to two amazing children, he prized his family above all else. There are no words to describe the depth of love for his family and the pride he took in his children's accomplishments. Known for his generosity and acuity, he was the kind of man friends turned to for help and advice; a shoulder so many leaned on over the years for strength and support during challenging times.

He will be terribly missed by all who knew him. Although his life was cut short, we take solace knowing that he lived in every moment fully. His spirit will live anew each time we recall all the great times, the laughter and the joy he brought to so many.

Chris leaves behind his wife Alex of Durham, New Hampshire, their daughter Samantha of Portland, Maine, and their son Jack of Durham, New Hampshire, his brother Kevin, of Chesapeake, Virginia and his sister Barbara of Holyoke, Massachusetts. He also leaves nieces, Taylor Auty, Jennifer Auty and Anne Goelet, nephews Henry Goelet, Philip Goelet and Benjamin Appleby-Maguire and great niece Sofia Sijmonsbergen.

The family thanks the physicians, nurses and caregivers at the Seacoast Cancer Center, the Wentworth Douglas Supportive and Palliative Care team, and the Tucker Gosnell Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers at the Massachusetts General Hospital for their extraordinary care and compassion.

An outdoor celebration of life is planned for the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Wentworth Douglas Charitable Foundation with designation to the Seacoast Cancer Center at https://giving.wdhospital.org/.

I am deeply saddened by this news. I was looking to see where Dr.Auty had moved his practice to, so that I could make an appointment for my daughter, not knowing he had passed. My whole family went to him because he was the kindest soul you would ever meet. I am heartbroken to know that my daughter won't get the chance to know such an amazing person! My heart goes out to all that knew and loved him! Such a great loss this is! We love you Dr.Auty!

Some years ago, I met Chris skiing through a mutual friend at Sunday River and saw him on the slopes occasionally. When my Massachusetts oral surgeon informed me after 4 long years of adult orthodontia that dental implants would not work for me, I thought of Chris and how competent and confident he seemed....well, certainly on the ski slopes....and decided to consult with him professionally. It took a bit of convincing my insurer that it really was necessary to travel from the Boston area to NH for treatment but so well worth it. After examining me Chris laughed and said yes a tight fit but of course it could be done. Right answer! I was the happy recipient of his easy, painless "punch" technique and nearly 15 years later those implants are still going strong.

I am very sorry to learn of his passing. He was a talented and caring medical professional and a pleasure to know.

I had the privilege of being part of the Great Bay Oral Surgery Team in the past. I was fortunate to have worked for Chris for 16 years. Chris was always so generous to my family and I. I feel blessed and very lucky to have known him. May eternal rest be yours, Chris. May God Bless and watch over Alex, Samantha and Jack and give them comfort and peace

I met Chris 3 years ago at Portsmouth Country Club - immediately I was taken by his sense of humor, passion for life and his generosity. We played many rounds of golf together and even on those days when golf is harsh he was always smiling and so positive. I´m surely going to miss our golf, conversation and his wisdom! See you on the other side friend! Too soon ....

Chris was a good friend and fellow professional. Our relationship started back in oral surgery residency days when I was a chief resident and he was one of my interns. As life would have it Chris and his partner eventually bought out my practice and he became my boss at the end of my career. He was always a person with a great love and respect for his Alex, his children and extended family, his patients, his fellow professionals and people in general. Betsy and I have many fond memories of our adventures together of the years. I know he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The classic BMW community lost a great friend. I was fortunate enough to have met Chris via the coupe car club and enjoyed many hours and days driving our and each other's cars, chasing parts and recounting how one of us found some unobtainable part. I will never forget our breakfasts at The Bean with "Drew" and Chris devouring a start of blueberry French toast covered with real maple syrup with gusto! He was outgoing, energetic and someone who enriched my life and those with whom he came in contact. He will be sorely missed.

Chris was a "top shelf" gentlemen. He had a big heart , very enthusiastic and fun to be around. He could have used some " bid whist" mentoring. He will be missed by many.

Alex,

We are so sorry for your loss. What a wonderful tribute to Chris. He obviously touched countless lives, and made all of them better. We will plant a tree here in Maine in his memory.
Let us know if there is anything we can do for you. Fondly, Dave and Diane

I am so sorry. Chris and my late husband, Jeff Taylor, perhaps are talking vintage BMW's in heaven. Prayers to the entire Auty family at this difficult time.

What a privilege I have had to learn from Chris how to care for staff, partners and patients, but never to put them before family. Thank you.
