Claire Dittmer Myers, age 94, died on December 27, 2024 at Good Samaritan Home.
She was born July 8, 1930, in Quincy, the daughter of Oscar L. and Helen Moore Dittmer.
Claire was a 1948 graduate of Quincy High School. She attended Quincy College, the University of Illinois, Indiana University, and, in 1982, after her children were grown, she attained her bachelor's degree in history from Quincy College.
On December 22, 1951, she married Robert Hobbs Myers who died in 2005.
Her family, her friends, and her life-long role as community volunteer were of paramount importance in her life. Among her many passionate interests were horticulture and local history.
As a young woman, she was employed by the YWCA where she worked with Y-teen groups. Later, she worked at the Brenner Library, Quincy College. She served on a number of community boards and her volunteer work included over thirty years conducting research and cataloguing at the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County. She also volunteered with the Quincy Service League, Family Planning, Inc., Community Council for World Peace, Quincy Art Club, and Quincy Public Library. She helped to organize several elementary school libraries and read weekly to first-grade classes.
She was a seventy-year member of Chapter FH, P.E.O. and a member of the Unitarian Church of Quincy, Illinois. A memorial service will be held there at a later date. Burial will be private.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her two brothers Donald C. Dittmer and David L. Dittmer and a sister-in-law Sibley Dittmer.
She is survived by daughter Jane McNamara (Steve) of Fort Worth, Texas, sons Rodney (Debby) of Quincy and Joel (Mary Kate) of Fishers, Indiana, and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to: Cornerstone: Foundation for Families; Quincy Public Schools Foundation (teacher grants); or Doctors Without Borders.
