Corey Chupp, age 46, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, with his dog and best friend, Josie, by his side after suffering a heart attack. He was born on February 23, 1978, to Robert and Cheryle (Johnson) Chupp, in Grand Haven, MI. Corey had a big, beautiful smile that could light up a room and an even bigger heart filled with love, empathy, and compassion. He was extremely loyal to his family, friends, and the Detroit Lions (Go Lions!). He loved making music, gave the best hugs, and always knew how to get people laughing. He passionately believed in justice and equality for everyone and courageously stood up for the people and causes he cared about. Whenever he was needed, Corey showed up.
Corey was an outstanding student and well-liked by his classmates at Reeths-Puffer High School, who voted him Homecoming King his senior year. His most cherished honor, though, was the Multicultural Award he received at his graduation in the spring of 1996. After high school, Corey went on to double major in religion and sociology as a Centralis Scholar at Central Michigan University. While at CMU, he became a multicultural advisor and biked from Boston to Seattle with his close friend, Pat Hanlin, to raise awareness for Hospice. After college, Corey traveled, settled in Denver, and entered the construction business. In 2010, he moved to Athens, Ohio, to pursue graduate studies; however, he felt he could make a more significant impact working with Americorps in New Orleans, supporting Hurricane Katrina relief. After receiving word that Ohio University had offered him a fellowship, Corey returned to Athens and began a Master's program in sociology and criminal justice at OU, becoming an adjunct teacher. While he loved teaching, he discovered that life in academia was not for him, so he started his own business, Athenian Construction.
Most importantly, Corey was loved by so many, and he loved others with his whole being (and let them know every chance he got). There are no words to express how much he will be missed. He is survived by his parents; and sister, Jennifer Maria (James (Dub) Swinehart.
A CELEBRATION OF LIFE will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTION to Feeding America West Michigan (Northside Churches – Truck 00375). Arrangements entrusted to The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services (737 E. Apple Ave., Muskegon, MI 49442). I´m very sorry for your family´s loss. I´m keeping you in my thoughts. I had the immense honor of knowing Corey for a few years while he lived in Athens. Every time Corey came into the grocery store he would instantly brighten my day! Corey always had a smile from ear to ear and an infectious laugh that made you feel appreciated. I was just thinking about Corey today and was deeply saddened to discover his passing. I may not have known Corey well but I´ll never forget him. You raised an extraordinary young man. Corey´s caring spirit lives within all of us who knew him.
