Corey James Coburn surprised his family arriving early April 16, 1977. He didn't come home right away but learned firsthand the loving care of the medical field that would become a big part of his life. Most everyone around him had no idea of his health issues throughout his life. At the time of his death he wanted to be home to spend time with friends and family for the time he had left. We are sure Vance his younger brother came to take him home! Corey passed early Wednesday, June 8, 2022.
Corey grew up in Davis County, attending schools in Layton and Centerville. He graduated from Viewmont High School in 1996. He attended Utah Valley University and Weber State University but remained a loyal Utes fan! He served a mission in Des Moines, Iowa, but came home early to receive his first heart transplant. He expressed gratitude for the Holy Ghost, as the Comforter "in the midnight moments."
From the time he was small and throughout his life, Corey made fast friends wherever he went. Many of his childhood friends were also lifelong friends. Corey was beloved by many from school, work, church, the neighborhood, on the golf course, the bowling alley, Stockman's and most recently at the hospital, and especially by family! Corey had a quick wit of which his friends, young and old, would attest to. He never complained and made people feel at ease in every situation.
He loved sports! While watching TV sports he learned to imitate his heroes, swinging bats, clubs and racquets, shooting baskets improving his skills. He loved to compete head-to-head and would get mad if everyone else wasn't playing as hard for his benefit. He loved a good cup of coffee in the morning. He loved Lake Powell, boating with his friends and listening to Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash and Brad Paisley. He loved to play poker. He was a slow and steady player who would grind it out until he either got a great hand or was ready to bluff. He loved dogs and dogs loved him, he took care of everyone's dogs for them. He loved eating good food at family gatherings but on the road, he appreciated a good corn dog!
Corey loved his big family, his Mom, Marsha Case, her husband, Craig, his dad, Terry Coburn, his wife, Rebecca. His siblings, Chris (Ann), Brittney Coburn Black (Matt); his little brothers, Chandler (Gaby), Brennan, and Austin Coburn; his stepbrothers and sisters, Jake (Nicole), Christer, Rick, Nathan, and Kelli Case, Tiffany Weltman, and Shannon LaPlant. He adored his nieces (Ella, Millie, Avery, Aly, Abby, Eisley and his nephews, Max and Niko.
Corey is reunited with his brother, Vance Coburn, and grandparents, Marie & Bob Nilson, Welton Coburn, Sheila and Dell Perry.
Corey remained humble, patient, kind, caring and appreciative to the many nurses, doctors, caretakers and administration over his lifetime. He remembered most by name and expressed gratitude for their care at each interaction. We are forever grateful for the hospital staff at Primary Children's Medical Center, University of Utah Medical Center, Intermountain Medical Center and especially to the Transplant Team at Intermountain Medical Center.
