Craig Lee Cushing, 75, of Colchester passed away peacefully on Saturday January 18, 2025 at the University of Vermont Medical Center. He was born on July 17, 1949 son of the late Arnold and Doris (Bogue) Cushing. Craig graduated from Essex High School where he met his future wife Pam Carpenter. They were married on July 26, 1969. He was proud to have served with the Vt Army National Guard during the Vietnam Era.
Craig worked for the Village of Essex Junction Public Works Department for over 30 years. He worked his way up to public works director, retiring in 1999. In 1997 he was named person of the year by the Vermont Municipal Highway Association. His lawn and yard were always in pristine condition all year round. Even his garage was spotless. Any time of the year he could be found mowing, raking leaves, painting, and shoveling snow.
When he wasn't maintaining his yard you could find him watching the New York Yankees play ball, or NASCAR and cheering on Bill Elliot in the 9 car, he absolutely loved watching Gun Smoke. He enjoyed yearly family trips to Maine with the whole family, going to fairs around New England and loved visiting Washington, DC. The last few years he loved playing cards and always looked forward to the next hand win or loose.
He always had a special place in his heart for his palomino Miniature Horse stallion named Iroc. He would take Iroc to parades, horse shows, and nursing homes. Occasionally he would go for a trail ride or to Pond Hill Rodeos in Castleton.
Craig leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years Pamela Cushing of Colchester, two daughters Lisa Bortz and husband Seth of Colchester and Susan Cushing of Milton, two sisters Elizabeth Sheltra of Essex and Rae Legrand of Florida, four grandchildren Tyler Bortz & Olivia Leo, Jessica Bortz & Austin Combs, Ashley Ingham & Timothy Fay, Haley Ingham & Fletcher Sordiff, a great granddaughter soon to arrive, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to his home health team, Ally, Bridget, MacKenzie and the nurses on Miller 5.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday January 28, 2025 from 5:00 pm until the hour of service at 7:00 p.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel.
