Craig Walter Syme

September 28, 1960 ~ May 14, 2021

Craig Walter Syme peacefully passed away in the early evening of Friday, May 14, 2021, surrounded by his family after a difficult four-year battle with colon cancer. Craig was a strong, dedicated, and fiercely independent person who loved hard work, the outdoors, and silly jokes.

Craig was born in San Francisco, California, on September 28, 1960, to June Carol and Benjamin Syme. He grew up in Ogden, Utah with his older brother Brad and his younger sister Kelly. Craig had the good fortune to have neighborhood buddies who became his lifelong friends. He attended Ogden High School, received his Bachelor of Science in Logistics Management from Weber State University and earned his Master of Business Administration from Brigham Young University. Craig worked diligently at whatever he pursued. He had a successful career that began at Orbital Sciences (formerly known as Fairchild Industries) in Germantown, Maryland. He later joined Bechtel as a Senior Project Controls Engineer in Frederick, MD and finished his career as a Project Controls Supervisor at the Blue Grass Project in Richmond, Kentucky. As his coworkers will tell you, Craig valued consistency and predictability, wearing a self-imposed uniform of a starched-white shirt and dark pants to work each day for over 19 years.

Craig had an unwavering belief in our Savior, Jesus Christ. He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 19 in Munich, Germany, where he shared his convictions with others. He strengthened his community and church by volunteering as a Boy Scout Leader, working with Habitat for Humanity, and serving in many Church leadership positions. He had the innate ability to teach others and motivate with ease.

Craig married a girl from the neighborhood, Laura Price, and together they raised two incredible children, Kaitlin Syme and Austin (Rachel) Syme during their years in Frederick, MD. His family was his highest priority, and he valued his role as a dedicated provider. Craig loved spending time outdoors and especially treasured his family time at their cabin in the woods of northern MD. He took solace in the silence of nature, an appreciation which he passed on to both of his children. Later in his life, Craig enjoyed puttering around on his side-by-side and cruising the lake on his boat, looking for wildlife and soaking up the scenery with his wife.

Craig's family will miss his generous spirit, mischievous sense of humor, and quiet strength. Laura, Katie, Austin, and Rachel want to thank their friends and family from across the country for their gentle support. A special thanks is extended to the amazing cancer teams at University of Kentucky and the Huntsman Cancer Center, for their expertise, compassion, and care.

Interment, Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
