Curtis Nathaniel Mitchell was born on August 17, 1947, in Madisonville, Kentucky, to the late Roy Douglas Mitchell and Gracie Mae Middleton. He peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.
Curtis attended Rosenwald High School and graduated from Madisonville High School in 1967. He went on to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College on a basketball scholarship. A gifted athlete, Curtis had a lifelong passion for sports, including basketball, baseball, fishing, golf, and tennis. Throughout his athletic career, he earned many accolades, with some of his most cherished including:

He treasured time with his family, enjoyed watching TV with his beloved dog Khloe, and found great joy in mentoring youth—whether through a kind word or in the church community.
Curtis accepted Christ at Lively Stone Church of God in Nortonville, Kentucky, where he was a devoted and active member. A lover of music, he played bass guitar and washboard for the church choir. He was employed for 23 years with Peabody Coal Company and later became a truck driver, eventually retiring from Tyson Foods.
In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by his siblings: Sadie (Neal) Johnson, Lucille (Luther) Morrison, Dorothy (Alfred) Collins, Irene (Lee) Grundy, and Roy (Bettie) Mitchell. He is survived by his sister, Bertha Ann Mitchell of Madisonville, KY, and three brothers-in-law: Kevin Johnson of Madisonville, KY, and Gary Johnson and Gerald Johnson of New Haven, CT.
Curtis leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Sherrie; three children: Tammy (Bryan) Scisney of Newburgh, IN, Curtis Nathaniel Mitchell Jr. of Hopkinsville, KY, and Antonio Jamaal Mitchell of Madisonville, KY; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
