Curtis Stephens, 90, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025. Born on January 15, 1935, he was the youngest child born to the late Verdealous and James Stephens, Sr. Curtis' dedication to his family was widely known. He leaves a legacy of compassion and service for others.

After graduating high school, Curtis enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he trained as a radar technician. He met and married Violet Penn while stationed close to Bedford County, VA. Curtis, Violet, and their son Dennis moved to Delaware County, PA. With the addition of Kelli and David, they remained in PA until returning to Bedford County for their retirement years. Curtis and Violet were married for 68 years.

He built a distinguished civilian career, retiring after 30 years with the U.S. Navy Technical Air Facility in Philadelphia, PA, where he served as a budget comptroller. He was committed to mentoring other employees to advance their careers.

Curtis was extensively involved in public life. He was a Boy Scout leader and church choir director. He enjoyed volunteering on election day and serving on the Bedford County Planning and Zoning board. His passion for the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, photography, and gardening, matched his commitment to the community. He attended and was a member of First African Baptist Church in Sharon Hill, PA; Bold Branch Baptist Church in Bedford County, VA; and Forest Presbyterian Church in Forest, VA.

He is survived by his sons Dennis and David Stephens and daughters-in-law Sharon and LaVerne Stephens. His grandchildren Alisha Goodrum (Kevon), Isaiah Stephens, Jayson Stephens, and great-granddaughter Kierra Goodrum will always cherish his memory. Curtis will be missed by his godchildren, Kamala Arango and Gerard Payne, Jr., as well many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Curtis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Violet Penn Stephens; their darling daughter, Kelli Yates; and his siblings, William Alton Stephens, Samuel Stephens, Annie Robinson, Ruth Stephens, Rudolph Stephens, and James Stephens, Jr. Curtis will be remembered for his honesty, love for his family, and unwavering sense of responsibility. His life exemplified modest leadership and abiding love.
