With broken hearts and profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Dakota James Welch, who left this world far too soon after a courageous battle with mental health challenges. Born on August 21, 2008, in Morris, Illinois, Dakota was a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and beloved friend and member of the community.
Dakota was the youngest of five children born to Sheila and Keegan Welch, lovingly known as "Baby Dakota" in a beautiful lineup of siblings: Hunter, Mackenzie, Kaden and Paxton. His gentle spirit and kind heart made him beloved by all who knew him. He had a special place in his heart for children and dreamed of becoming a pediatric mental health nurse, a calling that reflected his deep compassion and empathy.
In his final year, Dakota found solace and strength in his faith, welcoming God into his heart and finding a spiritual home at the Village Christian Church in Minooka. His love for God was evident in the peace he sought and the love he gave so freely.
Dakota's life was filled with laughter, friendship, and generosity. He was close to many special friends and extended family, including numerous aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. He offered kindness to everyone he met and had a genuine love for all. He also had a deep love for soccer, fishing, and hockey, passions that brought him joy and connection with others.
In his final message, Dakota asked that we not remember him solely for his final act, but for the entirety of his life and the love he shared:
"PLEASE do not remember for only this action. I want to be remembered for everything I was. I love you all."
To honor Dakota's wishes, a Celebration of Dakota's Life will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 6:30 pm at the Village Christian Church in Minooka, located at 8965 Bell Road in Minooka. We will be together with his favorite things: White Tea, Boba, Cosmic Brownies, Soccer, Fishing, and Hockey, remembering the joy he brought our lives.
Guests are encouraged to dress to represent your connection to Dakota whether it is Superhero-themed, a soccer jersey, Cubs gear, blue bird scrubs or anything that reflects his vibrant personality and passions.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in honor of Dakota to the Dakota Welch Memorial Fund at https://cfgrundycounty.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=2452 or visit the Community Foundation of Grundy County at cfgrundycounty.com to donate.
Dakota's light will forever shine in our hearts. Though we mourn his loss, we will carry forward his legacy of love, kindness, and faith.
