Dan R. Yowell

Dan Richard Yowell, 94, of Loveland, Colorado, passed away on October 19, 2025, in Loveland. He was born on April 11, 1931, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Benjamin W. and Faye M. (McReynolds) Yowell.

Dan spent his childhood in several Colorado towns and attended high school in Cañon City. It was there, at a school dance, that he met his future wife, Virginia. When he learned that she played the organ at church, he decided he ought to start going to church too, and before long they became high school sweethearts. Both graduated from Cañon City High School in 1948.

After graduation, Dan followed Virginia and her mother to Loveland. He attended Colorado State University, where he was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and earned a degree in chemistry in 1952. Dan and Virginia were married in 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Loveland and were married 73 years.

After college, Dan served two years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of captain while stationed in Okinawa with the Armament and Electronics Maintenance Fighter Squadron. After his service, he used the GI Bill to earn a pharmacy degree from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Dan began his career with Gilbert-Bishop Rexall Drug in Greeley. In 1957, he moved to Loveland to manage Macy's Rexall Drug at 4th and Lincoln Avenue. He later managed a second Macy's Rexall Drug location at 7th and Cleveland Avenue until 1966. That same year, Dan and Virginia purchased the 4th and Lincoln store and renamed it Dan-Y Rexall Drug, which they owned and operated for more than a decade. In 1977, they sold Dan-Y Rexall and purchased the 7th and Cleveland Macy's Rexall Drug and Normandy Inn Restaurant, which they owned and operated together until their retirement in 1994.

Dan was a true gentleman. He had a gift for friendship and was deeply respected by his customers, employees, and fellow business owners in downtown Loveland. He and Virginia enjoyed square dancing and card games with friends. Also tending to his beautiful iris garden, reading westerns, listening to records, and collecting old clocks he found at flea markets and garage sales. He never met a pie he didn't like, though lemon meringue was his favorite.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Karen Yowell, of Centennial, Colorado, and his son, David (Nicole) Yowell, of Loveland. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia.
