Dan and Shirley gave me Sophia, my best childhood friend. I always admired Dan for his gentle spirit and calm presence. I loved the way he looked at Sophia with such pride and love-it was clear she meant the world to him. And that smile of his, when Dan smiled, his whole face lit up.
As we grew older and I had children of my own, Dan continued to show up in thoughtful ways. He bought Girl Scout cookies from my oldest, let the kids pet and feed the horses, and welcomed us with such kindness and patience. He would send precious notes of encouragement pertaining to parenting that really touched my heart. His door was always open, and his stories were always shared with a warmth that made you want to stay just a little longer.
God always seems to bring the best ones home early. Dan was truly one of the best.

I have wonderful memories with my childhood friend Dan. Playing at his home on Grandview Ave and a banana tree his parents had in the yard that was brought in during the cold months. A visit to his grand parents Fischer Farms in eastern Jefferson County. I recall the grand parents spoke German at home and served us hot dogs. The original Fischer Meats.
I lost touch with Dan once I moved to South Carolina in 2006 but we resumed our friendship via FaceBook which was wonderful to see how proud he was of his family. Dan was especially sincere, kind and caring.
My deepest sympathies to all who loved him and may God's Grace and Peace be with you.
With love, from an old friend of Dan's, Jerry D Cooper
