Dan wed Jane Slough on December 24, 1965 and both attended Central Michigan University. Dan earned a BS in Physical Education, Recreation & Health with a minor in history. His first job interview was at Hale Area Schools, where he taught
until his retirement.
Daniel loved sports and played football, basketball, bowling, golf, waterskiing and baseball through college and his adult life. He was an avid tennis player and coached at Mt. Pleasant High School while in college. He coached basketball for ten years in
Hale, and football for many years. Two of the greatest qualities he instilled in his players, or 'lads' as he called them, were respect and integrity. In 2011 Dan was honored to be inducted into the Michigan Football Hall of Fame.
Dan's greatest love was spending time with his family. He is survived by his daughters Amy Soderberg (Rusty) and Kimberly VanderVeen (Joseph), grandchildren Eric Soderberg (Alison), Jordan VanderVeen (Caitlyn), Lindsey Hart (Steven) and Kevin
Soderberg (Bri). Dan is also survived by great-grandchildren Liam, Vern, Jemma, Zoë, Jameson, Drew, Jonah and Everett.
Dan was very civic-minded. He served on the Zoning Board for many years. He was well respected and valued by the community and always saw the good in people. He enjoyed spending time golfing, playing tennis, boating, cards, dice, hunting & fishing with both friends and family. He was a Tigers and Lions fan, and he loved watching all sports with his family.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Albert Sr. and Ruth Peters, his brothers Albert Jr. and Mark Peters and his nephews David and Christopher Oliver. The family will host a visitation at Buresh Funeral Home in Hale on Saturday, August 2 at 9am, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11am. There will be a private burial at Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan, Dan's hometown. We were blessed to have Dan in our lives and he will be greatly missed.
