Daniel David Zailskas passed away on January 1, 2026. Known to most as Dan, he was born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he first developed the competitive spirit, warmth, and love of family and community that would define his life. Dan lived a life rooted in family, hard work, and friendship. He was a proud graduate of Croft High School, where his athletic talent and leadership first came into focus.

A gifted athlete, Dan was a two-sport standout in high school before attending Boston College. He graduated in 1969 after an extraordinary collegiate career in both baseball and football. On the diamond, Dan starred for the Eagles and led the team to an appearance in the 1967 College World Series. He was also a four-year member of the varsity football team, excelling through grit, discipline, and leadership. In recognition of his baseball achievements, he was later elected to the Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame. Following his graduation, Dan signed a professional baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, fulfilling a lifelong dream of competing at the highest level of the game.

Beyond athletics, Dan was deeply committed to mentorship and education. He served as Assistant Dean of Students at Boston College, where he supported and guided students with the same care and integrity that marked every chapter of his life. He later found profound fulfillment coaching youth football in Marshfield, emphasizing respect, sportsmanship, and resilience as much as the strategy of the game.

A pleasant rascal, Dan was known for his legendary storytelling and for frequently gathering friends and family at his home for unforgettable parties filled with laughter and connection. Professionally, he spent much of his career as owner and operator, alongside his wife, of Country Marketplace, where he was cherished for his cheerful greeting of customers, dedication to his craft, and for treating his employees like family.

He inspired and trained his son to become a complete student-athlete, culminating in four years of varsity baseball at Harvard. In retirement, Dan remained happily competitive on the pickleball courts of Delray Beach, Florida.

He was the beloved husband of Jane (Dooley) Zailskas, Delray Beach, FL, a devoted father to Daniel John Zailskas, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Beloved brother of the late Roger Zailskas (passed away 2022), Carole Jobe of Dalton, NH, Lorraine Abbott of Marlborough, CT, Leonard Zailskas of Gainesville, FL, Marty Zailskas of Brookline, MA, Gloria Zailskas Long of Delray Beach, FL, and Raymond of Farmington, CT. He also leaves his beloved dog and constant companion, Dooley Girl.

Daniel David Zailskas passed peacefully holding a baseball with the words “I love you, Dad” on it, thus entering the afterlife as a true ballplayer on the diamond of eternity.
