Darlene Kay (Pershing) Deckard, 86, a beacon of warmth and friendliness, passed away on December 4, 2024, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was born on February 8, 1938, in Anderson, Indiana, the daughter of Calvin W. and Helen N. (Chestnut) Pershing. On November 28, 1964, she married Joseph Edward Deckard in Bloomington, Indiana. Her final moments were peaceful as she passed away due to natural causes in Columbus.
Darlene, a graduate of Odon High School in 1956, was a woman of many talents and interests. Her passion for crafts and sewing brought beauty and joy to the lives of those around her. As a devoted member and president of the Royal Neighbors of America for over two decades, she demonstrated a commitment to community service and leadership that left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Her life was a testament to the power of love and family. Darlene's legacy is carried on by her loving children, Joetta (Tim) Deckard-Spray and Jerrett (Julie) Deckard. She was a cherished grandmother to Joseph Thomas Deckard and Elizabeth Ann Deckard, whose lives were greatly enriched by her gentle guidance and support. Darlene also leaves behind her sisters, Janice Freeman and Sondra Francisco, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Jefferson, along with several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; brother, Frank W. Pershing and brother-in-law, Durward Freeman.
Those who knew Darlene will remember her as a faith-filled soul, whose kindness touched the hearts of many. Darlene's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, service, and the joy she found in her hobbies.
Burial will be at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery next to her husband, Joseph.
Memorial contributions may be made to the East Columbus Fire Department.
The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Bruce Bond officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home. The Deckard family requests that those who attend the visitation or funeral service to please wear a mask.
