David W. Burns
8/25/68 – 4/25/24
With incredible sadness, we announce the passing of David (Dave) William Burns of Western Springs, IL, who departed from this world on April 25, 2024, leaving a legacy of love, compassion, and enduring friendships to all who knew him.
He was the beloved husband of Kelly Weinberger, and devoted father to Jasper and Sacha Burns. Also mourning his passing are siblings Cindy Burns (Steve Dix), Candy Waylock (Eddie), Rob Burns (Jasti Salem), Ken Burns (Andresa); in-laws James and Joan Weinberger; sister/brother-in-law Katy Weinberger Welch and Rory Welch; and nieces and nephews, Jack, Sam and Grace Waylock; and Elisabeth, Tim, William and Alex Welch.
Dave was born on August 25, 1968, in Helena, Montana to Robert and Fujiko Burns. His early childhood was spent in various locations for his father's job, including Colorado Springs, CO, Pittsburgh, PA, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, before settling in Mt. Vernon, IL, when Dave entered middle school. He was a standout athlete in high school, participating in football and track, and graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1986.
Dave attended Eastern Illinois University for two years before transferring to University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he received his Bachelor's degree in consumer economics. It was at U of I where he met Kelly, and the two began a journey that lasted thirty five years. They married on October 26, 1996.
After nearly a decade spent living in Chicago and working in the corporate world, Dave and Kelly set off on a 14-month backpack adventure around the world, visiting numerous countries throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Upon their return to the United States, Dave entered the MBA program at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, and accepted a marketing position with Guidant upon his graduation. Two years later, he joined Kelly at WorldFinds, the fair trade social enterprise she founded following the couple's travels abroad. The company offers ethically sourced, handcrafted goods from around the globe, empowering women artisans and promoting sustainability.
Dave's tenacious fight against cancer ended suddenly, unexpectedly, and much too soon. His positive outlook and love of life made an impact on everyone around him. He loved his family, his good friends, his work, a good debate, planning trips and adventures near and far, the Denver Broncos, Formula One and his Tesla.
A Memorial / Celebration of Life service is planned for Saturday, May 11 at 2pm at First Congregational Church of Western Springs, 1106 Chestnut St., Western Springs, IL 60558.
Memorial contributions in Dave's name may be made to these organizations close to his heart:
