It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a remarkable man,
David Newton Casavant, who died peacefully on January 28, 2025. Fondly known as "Cazzie" to his friends and loved ones, David leaves a legacy that will forever be cherished. Born in 1940 on the Fourth of July in Winchendon, Massachusetts, David was an unforgettable character touching everyone he met with his lively spirit. As a loyal, loving, funny and reliable man, he possessed a zest for life that was infectious. A devoted family man and proud, life-long resident of Winchendon, David's life was a testament to his unwavering dedication and love for the people he held dear.
David's accomplishments are many, but the ones he held closest to his heart were those that involved his family and community. He was class president and a revered athlete, with an illustrious high school football career that earned him a place in the Murdock High School Sports Hall of Fame, both as an individual and as a member of the 1958 Championship Football Team. His love for sports was life-long and passed down to his next generations. He was an avid fan of New England sports teams and enjoyed watching games with family and friends. He also loved cheering on his grandchildren and reminiscing about his days playing football at Murdock and in the Marines. David proudly served his country as a US Marine and later became an active member of the Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion, serving in the Funeral Honor Guard and later as Post Commander. David held a wide variety of occupations over the years ranging from work at the Baldwinville Paper Mill to serving as local law enforcement, but his priority was always providing for his family that he loved dearly. Dave, however, was also known as the life of the party, whether it was on the dance floor, from the stands, or one of his infamous Christmas Eve parties, he had a knack for creating unforgettable moments. He will forever be loved and remembered by many.
David is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Dorothy Casavant, his daughter Lisa Morse and her husband Lee, and his son Craig Casavant and his wife Lori Sweet. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Ethan and Ava Casavant, Sarah, Sydney and Samuel Morse, his sisters-in-law Fern "Bibs" Casavant, Gail Casavant, and Linda Moriarty, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Sr. and Ruth Casavant, and his brothers, Henry Jr., Richard, Eugene, Philip and Dennis Casavant and his sisters Rachel Raymond, Helen Richards and Rita Bolton.
Calling hours will be held at Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central St. in Winchendon, on Thursday, February 6 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held the following day at 2:00 pm at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, on 111 Glenallen St. in Winchendon. A gathering for fellowship will immediately follow at the American Legion in Winchendon.
We encourage all who knew and loved David to leave memories and upload photos to the memorial page. His legacy is not just in his achievements, but in the laughter, love, and life lessons he shared with us all. Your anecdotes and pictures will help keep his spirit alive, celebrating a life extraordinarily lived.
