David Bruce Edwards passed away peacefully at Lucas County Health Center on December 8, 2025. David was born in Corydon, IA on May 17, 1951 to Ernest and Wanda (Wilson) Edwards. David grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1969 and was involved in many athletic activities and received 1st Team All-Conference 1st team and All State honors at fullback position in football his senior year. David had very fond memories of helping out and spending time with his Uncle Henry Becker, on his farm near Melcher-Dallas in his younger years. He worked for Midwest Concrete out of West Des Moines after High School and served in the Iowa National Guard from 1970-1976. David met Vicky Mayhew at CHS and they were married on October 30, 1971. David began his career with Hy-Vee in October of 1972 at the warehouse working night shift from 6:00pm-2:00am and later moved to day shift when the girls got older. He worked for Hy-Vee for 43 years, retiring on May 20, 2015. David and Vicky had 3 daughters, and David was very active in helping showcase their talents. He loved following them in all of their activities and was great at giving out pointers. David even learned to ride a unicycle at the age of 32 which led to all three girls learning to ride the unicycle! They all practiced and became very competitive in the sport, and they enjoyed many vacations traveling to competitions. He was extremely proud of his family and enjoyed being around his grandkids and working with them on their special projects or taking them to garage sales or a game of Kings Corners.
Many know David from befriending him at auctions, yard sales, thrift stores, junk yards, swap meets, you name it if there was a bargain to be found he could find it along with the other things that were in the box or sold on the whole table! David had a knack for learning about collecting the items he bought, which often became an obsession with finding more. He started with cars and racing and fixing them up, and then came collecting antique furniture, and onto toys (all kinds of toys), and then really anything that was considered a collectible. He has a unique collection of Chariton memorabilia, Coke and Pepsi items, and many family heirlooms he treasured very much along with the stories that went along with them. He loved to talk about all of it and had the ability to tell you the history of the item, where he bought it, how much he bought it for, and maybe he might tell you the value of it unless he thought you might want to buy it then he kept you guessing. He treasured things of the past and loved to share his knowledge.
David was always there to help out! It could be fixing a car, a house project, cleaning out buildings, or setting up sales. He was generous with his time and loved being with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards, helping his wife, kids and grandkids with projects and was quite good at the occasional practical joke with his friends and family.
David is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Vicky. Daughters Becky and Kurt Needles of Indianola IA, and their daughter Maggie and Zack Chiri of Indianola. Katie and Jarod Young of Cedar Rapids, IA and their daughter Olivia Young. Amy and Jansen Stuart of Chariton, IA and their children Cy Stuart and Lundy Stuart. Sisters Cheryl Cook, Linda and Gary Steenhoek, sister-in-law Sue Edwards, mother-in-law Pat Mayhew, sister-in laws Toni and Steve Irving and Renee and Dean Konrad and many nieces and nephews. David was proceeded in death by his parents Ernest and Wanda Edwards, and brother Don Edwards and infant sister Deborah Edwards, brother-In-law Ronald Cook, and sister-in-law JoAnn Edwards, and father-in-law James Mayhew.
