Alyce Spencer

Alyce Spencer, 90, of Lacona, passed away on January 3, 2026, at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton. A celebration of life will be held later this spring.

Alyce was born on December 13, 1935, at home on West Lake in Chariton, Iowa, to Walter and Marjorie Sandahl. She was raised in Chariton alongside her two younger brothers, Larry and David. Alyce attended Chariton schools and graduated from Chariton High School in 1954.
In 1955, she was united in marriage to Guy Spencer, and together they were blessed with three children: Mike, Ken, and Tracey.
Following high school, Alyce began working at Hy-Vee before becoming a devoted stay-at-home mother. She took great pride and joy in raising her children and was deeply involved in their lives and activities. Alyce volunteered with both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, served as a homeroom mom, and gave generously of her time to her children's schools and the community. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Lucas County Health Center Auxiliary.
When her youngest child entered third grade, Alyce returned to the workforce at J.C. Penney in Chariton. She loved visiting with customers and coworkers and remained there until the store's closing in the 1980s. She later moved to Indianola, where she worked at the Southridge Hy-Vee until her retirement.
In retirement, Alyce enjoyed Wednesday morning coffee with friends and was a proud member of Questers for 30 years. She cherished quiet time at home, often watching Dr. Pol with her cat, Rayne, by her side. Alyce was a true lover of animals and was known for her kind and gentle heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Marjorie Sandahl; and her husband, Guy Spencer, in 1984.
Alyce will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her children: Mike Spencer, Ken (Kim) Spencer, and Tracey (Scott) Neer; grandchildren: Kelsey (Taylor) Clark, Kamron (Paulina) Spencer, Zach (Jessica) Neer, and Carrie (Aaron) Buente; great-grandchildren: Scott, Ella, Briet, Raelynn, Charlotte, Noah, and Ana Lucia; along with many other relatives and dear friends.
