David Conrad Farrar, age 81 of Herrick St Ext Beverly, MA died at home on March 15, 2024. He was born on November 26, 1942, to David and Edith Farrar in Lincoln Rhode Island.
David earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Maine at Orono. He went on to earn a Master of Education degree from Salem State College in Salem MA with post graduate coursework at the University of New Hampshire.
He was married to Ruth Doris Farrar in 1980, they remained married until her passing in 2014.
He worked as a teacher at Beverly High School from 1964 until he retired in 2013. Part of his success as an educator came from his tendency to use unconventional approaches to the subject matter and continually challenge students to think for themselves and present evidence supporting viewpoints during class. He was also active in the athletic department coaching and officiating track and cross country during his time at Beverly.
Due to his hard work and diligence, he was recognized as teacher of the year and recognized as a fellow of Rhode Island College in 1992. He was appointed to the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University, where he served from 1995 to 2005. He also found the time to work as a consultant for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. A cornerstone of his legacy was helping to develop curricula for the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban South Africa. He was able to affect change in foreign nations and bring principles and differing points of view to educators around the world.
Throughout his career he participated in professional organizations, becoming a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, the Organization of American Historians, and the New England History Teachers Association. He served as an elected governor on the Massachusetts Teachers Association board of directors.
He was active in the St. Peters Episcopal church in Beverly MA.
He was an avid runner, participating in many road races over the years and Boston Sports fan. He could talk at length about the Celtic, when they were good, the Red Sox, when they were bad and the Patriots, when they were ugly. Another joy in his life was his love and appreciation of music, from early classics by Buddy Holly to modern day artists, he never stopped listening to and discovering new music.
