David Louis Friedman OD, age 73, of Harvard passed away at Emerson Hospital on April 23, 2020 from complications of Covid-19. Born in Queens, NY on February 14, 1947, he was the son of Jerry and Ruth (Ehrman) Friedman. David was raised in Baldwin, New York, the eldest of two children. David is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol (Considine) Friedman, his loving sons Andrew of Shirley and Zachary of Westwood, as well as Zachary's wife Elizabeth and daughters Isla Rose and Clara Ruth. David's sister Marilyn Friedman resides in New York City. David was a dedicated Doctor of Optometry and had a remarkable career treating patients and continuing his education. He completed his undergraduate training at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey, before relocating to Boston where he graduated from the Massachusetts College of Optometry (now New England College of Optometry) in June 1972. Following graduation, David joined the staff at the Teamsters Union Eye Clinic in Charlestown, MA before being recruited as a clinical staff optometrist at the MIT Medical Department in Cambridge. He opened his full-scope optometric practice Gateway Vision in Westford, Massachusetts in 1973, where he provided comprehensive and compassionate eye and vision care to families throughout northwest Middlesex County for over forty years before retiring in 2015. David continued his love of learning by earning a certificate degree in 2001 from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, and was a long time member of the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists and the American Optometric Association. David loved music, and was an avid reader and devoted NY Giants fan. In 2006, David had the distinct privilege of representing his uncle Benny Friedman upon his induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. David's loved ones find comfort in fond memories of family ski trips, celebratory dinners and holidays, and their special annual summer trip to Ogunquit, Maine, where David so enjoyed riding the trolley to Perkins Cove and indulging in ice cream with his granddaughters. A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 28, 2020 in the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King Street, Littleton. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Harvard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in David's name to the Westford Food Pantry, 20 Pleasant Street, Westford, MA 01886 or online at www.westfordfoodpantry.org/

David was my eye doctor for many years. 15 years ago we moved out of state and recently moved back home to Westford. I was so looking forward to renewing my friendship with David. Sadly I learned of his passing when it came time for my eye exam. I just could not believe he was taken so soon. I will miss him. We shared so many great conversations and laughs over the years. I wish the very best to all of David's friends and family. Stay strong.

I was a patient of David's for a decade and a half and used to chat with him at the Westford Regency gym. I recall running into him there at the time of the birth of one of his granddaughters and how happy he was to share the news. He was a wonderful doctor and I was very fond of him. I'm so sorry to learn of his passing. My condolences to his family, friends, and patients. It's a terrible loss.

Dr. Friedman was my eye doctor since the 1980s. He was amazing, he was the first doctor who was able to diagnose my rare eye condition. I was in his office the day Benny Friedman was inducted into the Hall of Fame and he was over the moon. I am heartbroken that he was taken so soon from his family. We patients will find him irreplaceable. My heartfelt condolences to all.

I met David 20 years ago when my arms proved too short to allow me to read small print. His professionalism and kindness were exemplary. Besides being my optometrist, I considered David a colleague and friend. Baruch Dayan Ha Emet.

I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. Friedman passing. He was my eye doctor for several years before he retired. He was kind, compassionate and professional. He solved my extreme nearsightedness with two prescriptions, one for everyday and one for working at my computer. That solution still works for me many years later, and I'm very grateful to him.

Carol, Zach, and Andrew....I am so saddened and sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Friedman. Of his 40 years in the Optometry business, I worked for him for 32 of those years as his Bookkeeper - accounts payable and payroll person along with other duties. He was by far the BEST optometrist I have ever had; his precision with eye care was impeccable. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire Friedman family at this time of sadness. Stay safe and healthy.

April 27, 2020

We were very saddened to learn of Dr. Friedman's passing. He demonstrated a high level of competence and compassionate care for each of his patients. In a particular situation, after he worked diligently with this individual, he referred this family member to a specialist. Not surprising that the improvement of the patient's condition was his primary objective. I still have the cards he gave me of his Uncle Benny's induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. Another example of his deep caring of others. Our sincere sympathy to Dr. Friedman's loved ones. He was a man who provided a high level of professional care for others. Rest In Peace!

George and I are shocked to hear this. We were patients of his since moving to the area in 2000. Dr. Friedman introduced me to CRT lenses which I continue to wear. Our deepest condolences to his family and the continuing staff at Gateway Vision.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been a patient of Dr. Friedman for many years. He was always so kind to me. Although had an air of friendly seriousness about him, which is appealing in a medical professional, I'll never forget the last time I saw him and how that all changed. I was very lucky to be at the office at the same time he was making what I understood to be his last visit to the office before fully engaging in his retirement (which had already partially started). The serious professional I thought I knew was smiling ear to ear, making jokes, in casual clothes, and clearly absolutely enjoying his new life. It was wonderful to see and it's a memory I will always cherish.
