David Allan McCombs, age 73, of Albia, IA, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.
David was born on November 27, 1951, in Perry, IA, to Lloyd DeWayne and May E. (Jones) McCombs. He grew up attending school and graduated from the Albia High School. On July 2, 1972, he was united in marriage to Karen Jean Oye at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia and to this union, 2 sons, Andrew David and Martin Allan, were born. David and Karen were blessed with 52 years of marriage prior to his passing.
David worked several different jobs over the years, including Chamberlains and Chicago Rivet in Albia and Union Carbide in Centerville. He most recently worked for 30+ years at Cargill, starting in maintenance and ending up in wastewater treatment prior to his retirement in 2014.
David was a man of great faith and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia. He was truly a jack of all trades who could build or fix anything and solve just about any problem. He was a talented carpenter and built his home. David had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed being outdoors, working in his yard, flower gardening and planting trees. He also enjoyed boating, trap shooting, woodworking, and working on cars. He was a great cook who loved to experiment with foods of all sorts. He enjoyed building and flying rockets and model airplanes. David was an animal lover, especially of his dogs, Happy and Chloe. He was a very kind and generous man who was willing to help anyone in need and loved to visit with others. Above all else, David's family was everything to him and he cherished all the time spent with them.
David is survived by his wife, Karen; 2 sons, Andrew (Gina) McCombs and Martin (Kiran) McCombs; 2 granddaughters, Satviki and Kylie; a grandson, Garret; 3 great grandchildren; a brother, DeWayne "Ivan" McCombs; and in-laws, Judy (Merle) Franzmier, Wanda Kaiser, Leeta (Scott) Sanger, Leo Oye, Bob (Val) Kaiser, Randy Kaiser, Lorraine Kaiser, and Linda Watts. David is also survived by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of good friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and May McCombs; in-laws, Molly McCombs Virginia (Tom) Thatcher; Dennis Kaiser, Colleen Kaiser, and Rick Kaiser; and his beloved dog, Happy.
Visitation with refreshments will be held from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia, with Dr. Jenna Harris officiating. Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.
A memorial has been established to Heartland Humane Society in Ottumwa, IA.
