Teacher, musician, and university administrator David Clement McCormick, 95, died on December 2, 2025 in Chapel Hill, NC. He was born in Destrehan, LA, the youngest son of Gertrude Stephens and Louis Lafayette McCormick.
After graduating from Destrehan High School, David earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Southeastern Louisiana College, followed by Master of Music in tuba performance and Ph.D in music from Northwestern University. He played tuba in the United States Army Band, then began his career as a music educator. He was head of the Music Department of Southeastern Louisiana University (1970-1987), then served as the vice president for academic & resarch affairs and interim president of the Louisiana State University System in Baton Rouge. He retired as CEO of University of South Florida at Fort Myers in 1997.
David was preceded in death by wives Lorraine Munger McCormick and Constance Dennis McCormick. David is survived by three children, Barbara McCormick of San Francisco, James McCormick (Juawice) of Water Valley, MS, and Carol Ann McCormick (Mark Peifer) of Chapel Hill, NC. Funeral service will be 10am, February 28, 2026 at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Hammond, followed by graveside service at 2pm in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans.
