David Leslie Newell, age 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, after an extended battle with dementia.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Beverly Newell; his children, Aaron Newell and Gwen Davidson (with husband Todd Davidson); and his grandchildren, McKelvey and Grant Davidson, and Harper Newell. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Borkowski and Janet Johansson.
David was born on September 1, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin, to parents Leslie and Ruth Newell and was raised working the family farm in Verona. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Wisconsin and was married to Beverly in June of 1964. Dave began his business career in Chicago, Illinois, in Superior Tea and Coffee's management training program. In 1967, he was drafted into the United States Army and served six years in the Wisconsin National Guard, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant. While serving in the Army Reserves, he continued to build his business career.
In 1973, David moved his family to Huntington, West Virginia, after purchasing a small food brokerage company. He ran and grew Sell and Serve Marketing until 1993. He and Beverly then relocated to Asheville, North Carolina, where he pursued his passion for entrepreneurship and community service. David played a key role in building the Western North Carolina YMCA and served on numerous nonprofit boards, contributing to Asheville's growth and vitality.
He and Beverly later lived in South Lake Tahoe, California, for three years, partnered with their son in Blue Lake Flooring & Paint. His final endeavor was a deeply personal one - spending six years with Always Best Care as a caregiver for retired businessmen living with dementia in Western North Carolina.
David was a compassionate and kind soul who always put others before himself. He found joy in helping communities thrive and in seeing his family live life to the fullest. He was an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather. That is his legacy.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring to allow family and friends time to gather and honor his memory.
