David William Otting was born January 28, 1939 in Ada, MN to Helmer and Ilene (Bennington) Otting. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends on December 1, 2023 at the age of 84 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley, MN with visitation starting one hour prior to the service.
David grew up in Ada and Felton, MN where he farmed with his family. He married Sheila Lou DesJardins on June 6, 1959. He was very talented and held a variety of jobs until settling into dairy farming. They farmed at Felton until moving to the Clearwater County area in 1965. With the help of their four daughters, they were dairy farmers until March 2001, before switching completely to beef cattle. David was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He worked with animals all his life. He was a problem solver, would make repairs with stuff he had on hand, and helped other farmers when they were in need. He enjoyed spending time with family, visiting around the kitchen table, telling stories, joking around while keeping a straight face, fishing with friends, and of course, farming. If you were lucky, he found you a nickname. For fun, he enjoyed going for drives and going to rummage sales, and in later years, driving for the Amish.
He is survived by his daughters Nancy Lougheed, Marilyn "Joan" (Jerome) Serbus, Deborah (Dan) Ley, and Teryl Otting; grandchildren Lindsey (Brett) Wyant, Casey Lougheed, Briana Serbus, David (Sierra) Serbus, Joshua LaRue, Sheila (Tyler) Tatro, Lee (Hannah) Waughtal, and Tyler Waughtal; five great-grandchildren Luke and Jacob Wyant, Dawson and Norah Serbus, and Beau Tatro; sister Marilyn (Daniel) Green; sister-in-law Roberta Otting; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sheila, of 61 years, in 2021; his brother Richard Otting; one infant sister; and two infant daughters.
