David G. Puraty, 89, of Newbern, Tennessee, formerly of Akron, Ohio, died at AHC in Dyersburg on Saturday, December 10, 2022. He joins his forever love, Mary, who preceded him in death in May 2022.
David will be remembered as a wonderful and devoted family man and provider, committed to doing things well and with intelligence. David lived a full and vibrant life, serving in the US Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Salem. After the war, David became a professional salesman for the rubber and plastic industry - a career he enjoyed for nearly 40 years. David was born on October 17, 1933 in Akron, Ohio, the eldest of three children to the late Ivan and Pauline Puraty. In 1955, David met and married the love of his life, Mary, after a short, six-week courtship. They would be married 66 years, separated only by her death, and together they had four children: Dan, David, Dianne and Tina. In 1979, the family moved to Newbern, Tennessee, when David began working for Colonial Rubber. He worked there until his retirement in 1995 and then joined Riggs, a local hardware company, where he worked for a few more years until his official retirement.
David's love of the ocean and boats did not end with his naval career, as he owned many boats in his lifetime, the very first boat being a wooden boat he restored with the help of his young sons. David was also a private pilot and loved motorcycles. However, he is probably best known for being an avid woodworker, as he enjoyed creating woodcrafts in his shop - a hobby that highlighted his attention to detail and ability to do things well. David was known for the many clocks he built and gave away over the years.
David is survived by two sons, Dan Puraty of White Bear Lake Township, Minnesota and David Puraty (Joanna) of Dyersburg, Tennessee; two daughters, Dianne Davison (Joe) of Dyersburg, Tennessee and Tina Puraty (Tony) of Greenville, South Carolina; one sister Joy Martter of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren, Laura Boals (Matt), Justin Puraty, Candice Puraty Starnes and Rachel Stover (Steven) and four great-grandchildren, Noah Stover, Layla Boals, Reece Stover and Sam Boals. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents and one brother, Daniel Puraty of Akron, Ohio.
Celebration of Life services will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society or the Wounded Warriors Project.
