David "Dave" Henry Sanders, affectionately known to many as Papa, passed away at the age of 84 in Howell, Michigan, on January 4, 2024. Born on December 27, 1939, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, David's warmth, humor, and adventurous spirit enriched the lives of everyone he knew.
Dave's journey through life was marked by love, laughter, and an insatiable appetite for adventure. He found his life partner in Sandra Lou (Eaton) Sanders, and together they navigated the waters of life for 63 beautiful years. Their love story was one for the ages and a testament to their unwavering commitment to each other.
A proud father, Dave is survived by his children: D'Anne Sanders, David Henry Sanders II, Shannon Louise Sanders, Chatt Franklin Sanders, and Jimmy Ray Sanders. His legacy will live on through his twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his zest for life and love for family. David's life was also blessed by the presence of his 54 foster children, whose lives he touched with his kindness and compassion.
David was preceded in death by his dear parents, Henry Everett and Thelma Louise Sanders; his brother, Dale Everett Sanders; his sister, Barbara Jo (Fuller) Sanders; and his cherished daughter, Shadene Lee (Mulkey) Sanders.
An alumnus of the University of Oregon, Dave received his bachelor's degree with a clear vision of his future. He furthered his education with a master's in Hotel Management from Washington State University, setting the stage for a remarkable career. Dave's passion for hotel management was evident from the age of fourteen, and it was a calling that took him and his family to fourteen cities across the country. As a regional manager, Dave's leadership and vision led to the building of four properties, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
Dave's commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. He was a dedicated member of Rotary and an active participant in his community. His dedication to fostering connections and supporting others was a hallmark of his character.
As a devoted family man, Dave cherished every moment with his loved ones. His readiness for the next adventure saw the Sanders family traveling across the United States, South America, and Europe, creating memories that would last a lifetime. An avid reader with a quick wit, Dave's endless love for children was evident to all who knew him. His presence was a source of joy and comfort, and his legacy of love and adventure will continue to inspire.
Dave will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His life was characterized by his loving nature, his sense of humor, and his adventurous spirit. These qualities were the foundation of the many roles he played and the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A time of gathering will be held to celebrate Dave's life from 1-5pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, MacDonald Chapel, 315 N. Michigan Ave., Howell, MI. All are welcome to attend.
