Jerry Dan Spalding, age 84, a lifelong resident of Howell, passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2025.
Born on August 26, 1940, to Burton and Lenabelle Spalding, Jerry was a proud 1958 graduate of Howell High School and went on to earn an associate's degree in music from Central Michigan University. His love for music shaped his life and touched the lives of many.
Jerry dedicated 35 years of service to McPherson/St. Joseph Livingston Hospital in the housekeeping department, where his quiet dedication and steady presence were appreciated by all who knew him.
A faithful member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Jerry served as the church organist for many years. He often composed his own music for worship, and his postludes became a cherished tradition-so stirring that the congregation instinctively fell silent to listen. Music was more than a gift for Jerry-it was a daily practice and a deep joy. He played for hours each morning and brought beauty into every note.
In addition to his musical talents, Jerry was an avid gardener and an enthusiastic outdoorsman. He found joy in backpacking, horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking, cross-country skiing, and capturing nature through his photography. He was also a gifted artist, with a keen eye for detail and creativity that extended far beyond music.
Jerry will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his happy-go-lucky nature, and the quiet devotion he showed to those he loved-especially his beloved twin sister, Nancy, whom he cared for with unwavering dedication.
He is survived by his twin sister, Nancy Spalding; his brother, Wayne Spalding of Fenton; his sister, Mary (James) Abbott of Pennsylvania; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Lenabelle Spalding, and dear sisters-in-law, Eileen L. Spalding, Mary Anne L. Spalding, and Marsha Spalding.
Jerry's presence was a blessing to all who knew him, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Howell community.
A memorial service will be held for Jerry at 11:00am on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6686 Oak Grove Rd., Howell, MI 48855. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jerry's life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Jerry's name to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church and the Livingston Land Conservancy.
