Delbert D. Surfus, Sr., 89, of Marion, formerly of North Webster and Columbia City, passed away at 8:31 am on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at home. He was born in Whitley County, Indiana, on Thursday, November 28, 1935, to Dalton and Dora (Harshbarger) Surfus. On August 6, 1960, he married LouEda "Edie" Prine, who preceded him in death on May 15, 2023.
Delbert graduated from Larwill High School and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1958-1960. Following his military service, he completed journeyman training in Tool and Die and worked at Q.S.I. Automation in Merriam, Indiana, where he was a skilled machinist. He was a member of American Legion Post #253 - North Webster and VFW #4717 - Wolf Lake. Delbert was most recently a member at Brookhaven Wesleyan Church and was previously a member of North Webster Church of God.
Delbert's most recent endeavor was helping to build lifts for the handicapped to have access to trucks, vans, motor homes, and homes. He enjoyed music and singing, especially at church. He also enjoyed going to family camp at Fairmount and spending time with his family and friends. Delbert will be remembered as a precise, compassionate, and self-taught man who used his skills to make life easier for others.
Survivors include his son, D. Dan Surfus, Jr., of Whitley County; daughters, Cheri (Timothy) Coomer of Corydon, Tamera Zerrfass-Bingham of Huntington, and Michele (David) Henry of Marion; 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with 3 on the way; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dalton D. Surfus; mother, Dora M. Surfus; loving wife, LouEda "Edie" Surfus; and sisters, Violet M. Hanawalt and Carolyn Frazier.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Brookhaven Wesleyan Church, 2960 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Delbert's life will begin at 12:00 noon with Rev. Alexander Henry and Rev. Tony Bye officiating. Private entombment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park (Fort Wayne) at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
