Delores Grigsby was born in
Minneapolis, MN on April 4th, 1933. She passed away peacefully on December 10th, 2023 at the age of 90 in Chicago, IL. She was a remarkable person.
The last time she was able to come to Minneapolis in 2015, she finally met all of her great nieces and nephews and some of her great great nieces and nephews. She treasured that day.
She attended Sumner Elementary School, Lincoln Jr High and Patrick Henry High School. In high school and throughout the 50's she studied and sang Opera/Gospel Music and performed at many churches, festivals and special events. She sang Opera/Gospel music. An editor at the Northside Post said she had one of the most beautiful voices he had ever heard.
She moved to Chicago in the 60's for voice studying. Her life changed courses in IL. She attended Northwestern University, Roosevelt University and Washington College.
She traveled to India twice on a spiritual journey. She studied with Guru Charan Singh. She was a Buddhist for many years.
She also loved to paint and sketch. She has quite a collection of paintings and sketche s she completed over the years.
Her absolute joy and passion was Genealogy and family history. She learned about our families all the way back to the 1800's. She met new family members through her research, who shared their research. Her stories from family members went as far back as the early 1800'sto find where our family came from in Africa. She has a Certificate of Ancestry confirming we share a genetic gene with the Hausa people in Nigeria

She was an avid artist. She has painted many scenic paintings and objects.
Her biggest interest and passion was genealogy. She traced the family history back to the early 1800's. She wrote the history of how our families came to live in Humboldt Heights AKA the sticks AKA the country in the early 1900,s. She worked with the Minneapolis Historical Society to establish a plaque for the Bannarn Family. Her great great grandfather had built a house out of tar on 50th and Humboldt. It was there until The Greenway Project. Both her mother and fathers families lived in that area.
She was preceded in death by Wilbert Grigsby (Father), Gladys Grigsby (Mother). Survived by her sister, Marcia Jackson. Survived by nieces and nephews, Roxanne McKinney (John), Andrea Jackson (William), Curtis Harper, Eric Harper, George Jackson Jr (Anna) and Marcus Jackson. She leaves behind 18 great nieces and nephews and 9 great great nieces and nephews.
The Memorial Service will be on Friday May 17th at 11:00 AM with visitation 1 hour before at Swanson Chapel 1600 Lowry Ave N
