Dennis M. Galloway was born on September 10, 1942, in Supply, NC to Maceo Galloway and

Annie Bellamy-Galloway. He was always willing to share the history of his hometown and was

proud of where he was from. Number 6 out of 8 children, and the last surviving member of his

family, Dennis passed away peacefully at home on Monday Aug 18, 2025.

Dennis graduated from Brunswick County Technical School in Southport, NC in 1960. He

serviced apprenticeship at Newport News, VA shipyard in 1961. He later became a certified

pipe welder for the State of Ohio and held his Journeyman card for welding, maintenance and

construction.

He worked for: Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, VA; American Shipbuilding,

Toledo, OH; Massey-Ferguson, Detroit, MI; and Ford Motor Co. Woodhaven Stamping Plant,

Detroit, MI. He retired from Chrysler Motors Corporation Toledo Assembly Plant, Toledo, OH.

In 1966, Dennis joined Phillips Temple C.M.E Church. He served as a usher and a Trustee. He

never hesitated to help maintain and repair the parsonage and the church building. You could

find him pulling weeds in the parking lot or repairing the roof. He truly loved his church.

On July 13, 1968, Dennis married his life companion of 57 years, Doris Powell-Galloway. Their

union was blessed with son, Dennis and daughter, Dione.

He enjoyed baseball, fishing, and telling stories, especially black history and family history. As a

kid, he would watch a baseball game on TV then go outside and play out just what he had

watched. He was fondly called "Big Don". Wherever he went, he never met a stranger. He

would strike up a conversation, hold the room captive with his strong baritone voice, and make

a story come alive. He was passionate about making sure the truth was told and loved sharing

things about his life.

Dennis had a green thumb and loved seeing things grow. He never hesitated sharing a house

plant or vegetables out of his garden. After retiring, he treated himself to a KitchenAid mixer

and enjoyed baking pound cakes and sweet potato pies. He also enjoyed cooking and eating.

He never got enough seafood, especially crab legs and fish.

Dennis also had a thing for good music. He listened to Smoky Soul Town on Sirius XM. In his

early years, he worked on the shipyard with Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. He also enjoyed

Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, and Barry White. Dennis would tell his grandchildren regularly that

"He was born by the river in a little tent".

He leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy his wife Doris; children Dennis and

Dione, Toledo, OH; three grandchildren: Jelani, Trinity, and Serenity; Great Grandchildren:

Jahvon and Josiah (he fondly called his #1 & #2). Our lives are forever changed by knowing

him, loving him, and learning from him. Now, he has been given the gift of eternity with God.

Remembering cousin Dennis, a truly inspirational figure, seeing him bond with my father, his first cousin, taking all sorts of pictures, enjoying life, and laughing, he was a towering presence, I recall that with the camera around his neck, he
some precious moments with me, bringing tears of joy to my eyes. I made it a point to stay connected with my cousin Dennis by sending Christmas cards or calling to say hello. He was a special soul who always spoke highly of my father, encouraging me to write a book about him. He was an amazing individual, and I know he will be deeply missed, his love for growing vegetables and seafood was inspiring, just like my father. I regret not being able to visit him in Dayton, Ohio. I take comfort in knowing that he and my father shared a special bond, rest well, dear cousin, rest well.

My husband & I met Dennis & his lovely wife 3+ years ago at a cook out at his nephew´s , ( Kenneth) home. We were definitely captivated by his stories! He was the life of the party, someone you´d never forget. We are very thankful to have had that wonderful opportunity and we give our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Dennis was quite a character and very amusing in my opinion. We worked together at Jeep and we always were bantering with each other. He was a good man and fair minded. May he rest in peace!
