Dennis Dean Unruh was born September 7, 1941 in Haskell County, Kansas, to his parents Dewey and Mabel (Eck) Unruh. He peacefully passed away on August 22, 2025, at his home with his family by his side. He reached the age of 83 years. As a boy, Dad grew up on the plains of western Kansas, where he received most of his formal education at the Gill School in Logan County. Dad was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on March 7, 1954, at Scott City, Kansas. He was a man of faith, and we felt secure in his love for God and for his family. On April 19, 1964, he was married to me, Rachel Good, at Kidron, Ohio. Together we shared the joys and sorrows of life for 61 years. After we were married, we first lived at Scott City, Kansas. However, we soon felt to move to
Versailles, Missouri where we were charter members and helped to start a new congregation. There we settled and enjoyed our life together. To our home was born three sons and three daughters. On November 19, 1994 our oldest daughter, Janis, passed away from leukemia. During this difficult time, Dad was a steadfast support for Janis and the family. His faith in God gave him strength. Dad loved to farm and was well known for his mechanical abilities. Along with his farming in western Kansas, he, together with his father and brother, had an Oliver equipment dealership. Dad had the ability to remember many models and systems he worked on and would often recite from memory the details of them. After moving to Missouri with his young family he began a dairy farm. Many good memories were made, even though there were plenty of challenges. Dad also did custom harvesting and made many lasting friendships in the community. Dad enjoyed grain farming and in later years raised poultry and beef cattle. Dad was often found working quietly in the background on some church and school maintenance or building project. His attention to detail was often apparent in his work. Throughout the years, Dad gladly volunteered for various projects including the MCC canner and organizing for the blood drive program and other such activities. Dad took a keen interest in his children and grandchildren's lives and loved to visit with them or work on projects together. Left to cherish fond memories are his wife, Rachel,
Versailles, MO; his children, Stanton and Juanita Unruh,
Versailles, MO, Lisa and Randy Hauder, Bloomfield, IA, Daryl and Diane Unruh, Dana and John Sensenig, Jerel and Emily Unruh, all of
Versailles, MO; twenty-four grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Good, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Dorothy Good, Lena and Luke Troyer, and Aneta and Tim Hochstetler, as well as many other friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janis; his parents, Dewey and Mabel Unruh; parents-in-law, Heber and Edith Good; his sister, Deloris and Richard Koehn; his brother, Waldo and Edrie Unruh; his sister-in-law, Mary and Ben Swarey; and his brothers-in-law, James Good, and Jon Good. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at Beulah Mennonite Church near Versailles. Burial will follow in the adjacent Beulah Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 26th at the church. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles.
