Dennis N. Watgen, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away suddenly, at home, on April 7, 2025, in Waterman, Illinois, at the age of 72. Born on December 4, 1952, in Aurora, Illinois, to the late Robert and Choral (nee Spang) Watgen, Dennis's life was marked by his adventurous spirit, selflessness, and generosity.
Dennis grew up in Aurora and was a proud graduate of Aurora Central Catholic High School, class of 1972. His work ethic was evident early on, as he began his career with Eby-Brown before establishing a long-standing tenure at Northern Gas Co., which later became Nicor Gas. He retired in 2012 as a Distribution Technician, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and hard work after more than three decades of service.
On October 4, 1975, Dennis married Joyce Schindlbeck, and together they embarked on a journey of love and family that lasted 37 years until their divorce in 2012. Despite their separation, Dennis and Joyce maintained a strong friendship that endured until his passing, a testament to their mutual respect and care for one another.
Dennis was a devoted father to Nicholas (Robin) Watgen, Shannon (Tom) Watgen-Fennell, and Jacob Watgen. He found immeasurable joy in his role as a grandfather to Luke Fennell, Lily Watgen, Brantley Watgen, and Tanner Watgen. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every opportunity to create lasting memories with them.
His siblings, Tom (Katie) Watgen, Cathey (Richard) Watgen, Debbie (Mike) Solecki, Don (Susan) Watgen, and William "Bill" (Laura) Watgen, along with several nieces and nephews, will remember Dennis for the strength and warmth he brought to their family. His presence was a source of comfort and joy to all who knew him.
Dennis's passion for the great outdoors was unmistakable. He relished camping trips to Iron River and quiet afternoons spent fishing on the lake. His commitment to nurturing young minds was evident in his many years serving as a Boy Scout leader for Boulder Hill Troop 84. His influence on the lives of countless young scouts will be felt for generations to come.
A lifetime member of the Aurora Turners Club, Dennis was also known for his love of classic Westerns, often found with a Cowboy movie playing or an episode of Gunsmoke in the background. His love for his dogs, Marcus, Megan, and Grace, was yet another reflection of his caring nature.
Dennis's legacy is one of boundless love and selfless giving. He approached life with an open heart and an adventurous spirit, always ready to lend a hand or share a moment of companionship. His generosity extended beyond his immediate circle, touching the lives of many in the community.
As we bid farewell to Dennis, we reflect on a life well-lived, a journey filled with laughter, love, and the great outdoors. His memory will be treasured in the hearts of his loved ones and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Dennis N. Watgen's story is one of unwavering commitment to his family, his work, and his passions. It is a story that will be told with fondness and pride for years to come
