Derrick (Rick) Aardal, age 64 of Bloomfield Hills, MI. died unexpectedly but
peacefully at home to the arms of Jesus Monday, January 22. He shared
his life with Gary Heppard for 38 years. He was the son of Thaddeus and
Audrey Aardal, brother of Debbie (Russ) Simms and Randy Aardal. Uncle
of Justin (Colleen) Simms and Jeff (Megan) Simms, and Great Uncle to
Benjamin, Jamison, Izabelle, Cayden, and Conrad.
Rick was born in Detroit and grew up in Redford Township. He graduated
from Redford Union High School class of 1977. There he played
saxophone in the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands. He began his love
of singing in the school choirs, madrigals, and plays. He went on to
college at Central Michigan University where he also sang in many musical
groups. After graduation he decided to pursue a degree in nursing and
received his RN from Henry Ford Hospital downtown. He worked on F2 for
many years before going into the Pulmonary Department. He recently
celebrated 36 years with Henry Ford. He loved working with people and
patients but most of all loved the staff and all the dear friendships.
Rick continued singing in his life at Good Shepherd Lutheran and Zion
Lutheran in choirs and many solos. He also sang for many weddings of
family members and friends. His love of singing led him to join the Detroit
Lutheran Singers in which he was a member for 30 years. He enjoyed this
part of his life and the many friendships.
Rick was also a member of Sons of Norway, Nordkap Lodge and was to
receive his lifetime membership of 30 years this year.
Rick loved being with his family and especially when he could see and be
with his nephews. As they married and had children, he enjoyed hearing
about and visiting with the great nephews and niece. He especially loved
swimming in his sisters pool.
Rick's untimely departure has led a huge void in the hearts who loved and
cherished him. As we come together to mourn, let us all remember the
warmth, kindness, and positive impact he had on all of the lives he
touched and remember the great hugs that he so freely and lovingly game
out.
