Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kaatz Funeral Directors - Richmond on Oct. 1, 2025.
Diane Jane Bauman, with profound sorrow and deep respect, we announce the peaceful passing of Diane Jane Bauman on the 13th of August 2025 at the age of 81. A long-time resident of Richmond, Diane will be lovingly and dearly remembered by those who carry different memories and reflections of their time with her.
She leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Ronald, with whom she built a life full of love and laughter. She is deeply missed by her children, Ginger and her partner Jerry, and Gene and his wife Laura. The grandchildren she adored - Matthew and his wife Ashley, Stephanie and her partner Dave, Lauren and her husband Jonathan, Lindsay and her husband Bilal, and Brooke. They each had a special place in Diane's heart. She bragged about them often and never missed a chance to celebrate their lives and accomplishments. Her great-grandchildren - Brady, Theo, Crew, and Marina filled her later years with light, laughter, and happiness while reminding her that life keeps blooming. She is also survived by her brother Dan (Mary), sister Sharon, as well as a wide circle of loving family, lifelong friends, and kindhearted neighbors.
Diane lived with a heart and spirit deeply rooted to the Earth. One constant in her life was her passion for beautifying her surroundings through gardening. She found peace in the soil, purpose in planting, and pride in watching things grow. Her gardens were where she expressed her care and creativity - season after season. As the flowers continue to bloom in the spaces she tended, so too will the memory of her presence remain. Together, Ron and Diane shared many years of love, laughter, jokes, bantering, wisecracks, and sarcasm. Much of this was enjoyed with friends and family around campfires, on holidays, during phone calls, or really any space or moment available. Laughter was definitely in their recipe for happiness, connection, and joy with others. Diane had many talents. Among these was her ability to say, "I told you so" without ever saying a word. She was the master of eye rolls, as well as the long, dramatic sigh that stopped people in their tracks no words required. Diane lived her life with flair, fire, and a fierce loyalty to her favorite casino rewards program; She rarely met a glittery slot machine she didn't like. Her hobbies included birdwatching, yelling at the TV, hoarding the remote, thinking out loud with a lot we didn't want to hear, and playing those penny slots like a high roller. After all, she found it necessary to win back everything Ron lost - plus more! She believed in her intuition, trusting her gut, and never leaving the casino without every free perk.
Diane also loved sports, specifically, the extreme sport of bargain hunting. Retail prices meant nothing, every purchase required a complex strategy involving multiple coupons, specific sale dates, and the strategic hovering near clearance racks. This self-taught skill was second nature and she was always excited to share the thrill of her bargains. Lastly, in 2018, a large missing part of Diane's life was finally discovered. She always knew her ancestry included Native American family but had no idea from where. With the help of Elders, her lineage can now be traced in a family tree dating back to the 1700s. She is now listed in the family tree, being very proud to discover that she is a descendant from the Okanogan Nation. This puts an extremely gratifying closure to the lifelong curiosity of her roots.
Per Diane's wishes there will be no funeral or the customary giving of flowers leave them to grow in the beauty of gardens. Instead, do something unexpectedly kind for a stranger, do good, be compassionate, hug your loved ones, plant something beautiful, make a delicious meal, donate to
your favorite charity, reach out to help, share a special memory, and never forget to say, "I love you." Though the Spirit never dies, Diane's body will be cremated and her ashes spread upon the Earth she loved so much. As we grieve, we also give thanks - for the time we had together, the memories and moments we shared, and the love we will carry forward. Walk well on your journey, Garden Whisperer, we will always remember you and we will always speak your name. Reunite with your ancestors who came before, watching over those yet to come.
At this time there are no services scheduled for Diane. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond.
